what card should i get?

post #1 of 40
Thread Starter
I'm not sure what graphics card i want to get, but i want to get back into pc gaming once again, i play GTA IV, and GTA V when it comes out, Crysis, and they are the two most demanding games i play, along with Dirt 3 and CoD 4, i will also want to play the next assassins creed,

my system spec is

i5 2500k (No OC need to purchase new HSF)
asus p8Z68 - V LX (is this good for OCing my cpu?)
Corsair CX430 (i feel this is a limiting factor)
Antec 100
Intel 80gb SSD X-25
2 x 250 GB HDD
8 gb G-Skill Sniper 1.25v (going to buy another 8 gigs for 16 as i do a lot of video editing and rendering)

i don't want to spend lots but i do want some decent performance! (used to have SLi GTX 480's)

A budget would be a big help. If your in the 300 dollar range the 7850/7870 would do nice. Ive seen some gtx 570s in the 250 dollar range. Neither will be as powerfull as your old sli 480s.

HD 7850/HD 7870 and a good PSU no that thing
post #4 of 40
..... WOW talk about overkill

This is IMO the Radeon 6870/6850 would do just fine.

6870- about $150 (on newegg after rebate)
6850- about $130 (on newegg after rebate)

I own a Gigabyte 6870 and It plays everything on HD with max settings but I never played Crysis on it. and I only use 1080p
I have played:
Starcraft 2
Dirt 3
Deus Ex:
Skyrim (Modded like crazy so everything is HD quality)

According to Benchmarks for the 6870/6850 Crysis Warhead gets about 30fps (6870) or 26(6850) on "Extreme graphics setting"

I'm am not extremely knowledgeable about the makings of a Graphics card but a computer/software engineer friend of mine tells me about how we are reaching our limits when it comes to graphics card.
He pointed out to me a commercial for one of the newest Nvidia cards that talked more about its efficiency compared to other cards and less about its computing power..... wonder why.

IMO you don’t need the newest generation b/c it’s not that much better than its predecessor

EDIT: will note that many website show the 7000 series to be more efficient up to 35% for about 10% better preformance you'll have to decide if its worth the extra money

He used to have SLI GTX480 and now he's supposed to get 6870 ? wth.gif , anything less than GTX590 or 6990 will be a downgrade in terms of performance but those cards are not really a good investment at this point in time.
I would get GTX680 and SLI down the road , or get two 7950's straight away to be honest it all depends on your budget.
I used to have SLI480 as well and upgraded to GTX590 which was hardly a upgrade in performance but it was a huge upgrade in comfort , no more infernally hot cards sounding like a jet, since there is not a lot of solutions which will offer better performance and not cost you arm and leg I'm assuming you're looking for this kind of upgrade.
In this case GTX680 looks like a best bet and if you want more performance later on you can always SLI, alternatively if you want AMD go with 7970.

If you're upgrading from SLI 480s (albeit spiritually), I would consider either a GTX 580 or 680. The 680 is much more powerful, but it's only slightly more expensive.

@remnant
A single GTX 480 is much faster, in terms of performance, compared to the HD 6870. Believe it or not, the HD 68XX family was actually a failiure IMO to their predecessor, the 58XX family; the 58XX perform better than the 68XX.

@13ack.Stab
Agreed. Right on the ball.
