GTX480 Temps. Worth it to overclock? - Page 3

Like others have said I recommend replacing the TIM and give the coolers a good clean up first then use a custom fan curve. This helped my launch day 480 TREMENDOUSLY!

My newer 480 runs like ICE in comparison to my old one with the same voltage/fan speed so Ive left it alone. I wonder if the newer 480's have less leakage.

I was able to run the 480 at 1.075v at 825MHz and I was topping out at about 95c in games and over 100c in Furmark which is still very very hot, but it didn't crash.
I decided to get an aftermarket cooler and got the Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo II
http://www.arctic.ac/en/p/cooling/vga/375/accelero-twin-turbo-ii.html
It can be found cheaper elsewhere.
I can now max the voltage slider at 1.150v and hit 900MHz core clock. In Furmark I max out at about 85c but in normal games I never see above 75c. Also, the fans on the Arctic are quieter than the GTX480 fan at 50%. In my case, they are silent as my CPU and Case fans are actually louder.
So yes, the GTX 480 can overclock quite nicely on air even with a "cheap" but good aftermarket cooler. Don't need to go to water. I'm at the card's voltage and clock stability limit and not limited by temperature.

I have read everyone's suggestions and I want to thank you for the incite. I don't always game with headphones so noise is something that is important to me and while I tend to favor the reference 'style' because it blows the majority of the hot air out of the case and not just around the inside of it... The noise level's for me are too high for my personal liking. I'll be looking to replace my stock corsair case fans at some point too for something a bit quieter.

The Arctic Cooling Accelero was something that I also stumbled upon @ tomshardware, having you guys also recommend it was some assurance that it works well. I think I will be looking to buy one of these tonight and try it out. After replacing the TIM and heat exchanger I'll be sure to post here if I successfully get a decent OC on my card

Thanks again all

Yeah I'm not sure. I know this 480 was bought the day it was introduced to the market... bought it second hand off of a buddy who bought the GTX590 (on the release day none the less) all in all it does run really hot, but it works just fine.

Water is a 480s best friend biggrin.gif. I'm at 850 core each and they stay in the low 60s with my fans on my rads at low speed.

prepare to turn your room into a nice sauna if your going to OC, 88c is toasty let alone a guaranteed 95-100c if OC'ed, if i were you the first thing I would do is re-paste the GPU. Before I jumped ship to AMD I had purchased a GB GTX 470 and the heat was just too much. I'm not rich so I cannot have the AC running 24/7 mad.gif Hopefully you can get lower temps by re-pasting and maybe buying an aftermarket cooler smile.gif

I just bought one of these on the advice of people here at Overclock.net thumb.gif and a good review from tomshardware

http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=62735

When I throw it on there I'll be removing the original TIM obviously lol so hopefully the combination of the two will help me get the temps down and the fans at a tolerable noise level

yea you should be fine after upgrading the cooling on that 480, as far as noise goes im going to be honest here, I guess im one of the few that actually like's the sound of a vid card at 100% fan speed (assures me that something awesome is going on biggrin.gif). Of course this does not bother me at all since the noise that is coming from my speakers or headset surpasses any noise coming from my rig. When it comes to watching a movie I just set up a different fan curve in AB and after that everything is butter from there on..

LOL yeah I hear ya man, at least you know your card is being cooled and most of the time the noise is drowned out by the game or music. I would prefer a slightly warmer card over a louder card, but hovering at 88-91c I don't want it to get any hotter

Yeah so I finally got my Accelero XTREME Plus II installed today and my temps on BF3 went from (in multiplayer) 88c down too 56c with the fans @ 50-55% speed.

Thanks all

Other thoughts: I found it a bit of a pain in the ass to install as it didn't come with screws long enough to fit it to my PCB so I had to go out and buy some. Additionally its easy to hit the alluminium heatsinks that go over the voltage regulators while placing the main part of the card (which in turn took me 3 times to install, since it will move them out of place rolleyes.gif)

If i had any idea what i was doing and not fumbling around I woulda made a tutorial for others because I couldn't find one that breaks it down "for dummies" style. Anyway so far so good, like it thumb.gif
