[Various] HTC One X Reviews

The leader of the next-generation HTC One series of smartphones has been a breeze to use. Android 4.0 has been improved upon with HTC Sense 4 while still retaining the overall look, feel and function of Ice Cream Sandwich, which in and of itself has an excellent user experience. The camera is a high point, Beats Audio makes music sound better, and you get a bunch of online storage thrown in for free. HTC easily has a winner in the One X.

On a couple occasions during my week-odd endeavor to make the One X my primary phone, I installed and used Apex Launcher, an excellent home screen replacement that starts with stock Android 4.0 as a foundation and adds a handful of useful features. It doesn’t seek to reinvent the wheel, it doesn’t fight Android’s natural grain — it just takes a great product and makes it a little bit better.

And it got me to thinking: why isn’t this exactly what Sense is trying to do? HTC should be building its software story around unique functionality. To a large degree, it is — take the excellent ImageSense, for instance — but in the process, it’s also tossing in an entire layer of questionable design. Not bad design, necessarily, but it’s still design without purpose, design that needlessly overwrites Google’s really cohesive (and superb) Android 4.0 user experience. I understand HTC’s inherent need to “make its mark,” but with the One X, it’s already doing that by creating perhaps the best phone hardware I’ve ever used.

Pretty cool phone. As usual though, Sense sucks.

The Verge is the only that complains about the camera... Others love it. Who wouldn't love being able to take pictures while taking video?

Camera looks amazing, however I couldn't give a damn about beats audio.

Well to be fair, at least with the beats audio the gimmick includes a better pair of earphones then what you get by default with other phones, at least that's what I would guess.

Yeah right biggrin.gif

I would like to buy a new phone but no idea would it be this or the Lumia 900.

But hey, having Beats Audio doesn't hurt much because phones do have subpar sound quality to begin with. Much better than the stock DSP manager in Android phones, and the bundled Beats earphones aren't that bad - though you wouldn't catch me using them. tongue.gif

Nice. I think Android 4.0 is getting me to ditch my iPhone. Nice to see the One X Lives up to the hype. I have AT&T and hope to get the S4 varient as it will be better on battery life and potentially better on performanace for single threaded applications.

The camera looks amazing, but for the mainstream there's no real need to have a camera that good.

Crappy teenagers are just going to post ridiculously over-saturated bokeh "enhanced" images of traffic cones and shoes anyway.

It'll be interesting to see how this phone retails.

On a personal note, I'm really considering getting one (no pun intended), though I might wait until the price drops a bit since €629 (which is what it retails for over here) is a bit steep.

Hmm wonder how that compares to HTC's old SRS enhancement thingy biggrin.gif At least that one just utterly messed up the sound. And yes, I think I'll stick with my HD 238's for travel use rolleyes.gif
