Adding another 5870

Thread Starter
Currently have a HIS 5870. Would it be worth it for me to get another one now that they are fairly cheap? I only plan on gaming on 1 24" screen for the meantime. Eventually I will upgrade to three though. Just wondering your guys thoughts on this!
Thanks!thumb.gif

You want to play with 3 screens?
Only problem i see is the 1GB vRAM. If you stay 1080p under you should be fine.

It would be a nice upgrade, especially for a single monitor as the 5870's are great cards.

The only thing that is making those cards look dated is that they only have 1gb vram, but for a single monitor that shouldn't really be a problem you just might not be able to max out AA on every game without stuttering.

For more than one screen you might want to upgrade to a card or cards with more vram.

Ok so if I were to stick with one monitor its worth it? I do not plan on upgrading to 3 for a long time.

I would say for 1 monitor getting a second 5870 will be worth it, but when/if you upgrade to more than one monitor I would definitely look into getting a card with 2-3gb vram.

Depends on what games you play I use to have a 5870 and it would choke at 1080p with most newer games. If you play crysis or bf3 they use well over a 1g.

If you can handle microstuttering then yes, they are worth it (correct me if I'm wrong on the microstuttering issue)

^ BF3 90 FPS w/ 2x 5870 felt much less smooth than a single 5870 with around 45-50 FPS.

2 issues:

limited vram. a lot of games are using up 1gb at 1080p.
microstutter. if having a smooth, "fluid" experience is important, avoid x2 GPU configs.

Go out a grab a second hand 6950 and sell your current 5870. Then you'll get much better performance.

EDIT: 2gb 6950 i mean smile.gif
