Looking good for 2012?

Thread Starter
Around this time every year i take a look at my rig and decide on what needs changing, if anything?

So far i've had to swap out my motherboard due to faulty/flakey USB ports. After 2 RMAs i'm dropping the Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD7-B3 for an ASUS Sabertooth Z77. The UD7 will become a spare part for troubleshooting.

Seeing as this was more or less a waste of my budget (Unlucky having a problem prone motherboard, my mates run perfeclty fine and they have the same board, so nothing againt Gigabyte.). What needs changing out or is there anywhere i can squeeze any more horse power out of this thing for around $350 that would make a difference.

CPU: 2600K
GPU: GTX580
SSD: Corsair Force (285/275 SATA II 3Gbp/s)
HDD: WD Black 1.5TB
MOBO: ASUS Sabertooth Z77
Monitor: 27" Dell 2700
Mouse: Logitech G9
Keyboard: Razer Blackwidow

As it stands now i think it's looking pretty good with the only thing standing out to me is the SSD. I've been mulling over the Intel 520, but have a feeling that the investment wouldn't really be worth the outlay....

Next in line is the mouse. I've had the G9 for quite a while (about 2 years) Is there anything else that's better on the market? Is the G9X any good? Maybe something else entirely?

What do you guys think...Anything

Fanks =D

Possibly another 580??

I know the for sale section has been flooded with them recently since the 680 was just released biggrin.gif

Haha indeed. But i'm a single man - Oh i'm married, but prefer just a single card. here in Norway the used markets have also been flodded with 580s. It's certainly tempting tongue.gif.

Trade the 580 for a 680 if you can -- according to reviews, they're significantly more powerful than the older generation. What's more, the 680s are only slightly more expensive (between $20 and $60 depending on your luck).

I also highly recommend one of the Crucial M4 SSDs, because while they aren't the fastest drives out there, they've got rock-solid stability.

I never realised the M4s offered good stability, i've always been a fan of Intel for stable drvies. I might look into tha actually. Thanks for the tip!

Agreed the M4 series is rock solid, some of the most universally highly recommended SSDs out there. thumb.gif

actually he forgot to tell you about M4 5200 hr bug which was resolve quick, intel 520 ssd are based on sandforce 2281, they are much faster both read/write, I myself use Mushkin Chronos on sandforce 2281, cheaper than both of your ssd, but performance wise bang for the buck right now....

Indeed. The firmware update to resolve the bug was released very shortly after discovery.

And the SandForce controller has had its fair share of problems, too.

But each SSD has its own benefits, so definitely take your time and weigh your options. thumb.gif

Edit: Whoop, that came out a little more snarky than intended, haha. Time to suppress the inner fanboy.

well this means M4 are not rock solid, like what you said they have flaws like any man-made components.... sandforce also fix their flaws thru firmware like m4 did.
