No real need to apologize. Just view it as an important learning experience. The Windows Way != The Linux Way It is only because of the closed and centralized nature of Windows (just consider the monolithic Registry for a clue) that it requires so many reboots and the only fix is often Repair Install or Complete Re-Install.

One of the best things about Linux is Daemons. Consider a situation in which an office memo is sent to 100 people and each is supposed to respond to it. Let's also say that 25 of them decide to edit the original document, and then "save as" original name, not locally, but back at the server. Windows will come unglued but Linux just takes such as this in stride. This is oversimplification of complex processes but hopefully it's easy to see the concept. If key, active process files are altered in Windows, it must reboot to replace the old one with the new one. Linux can serialize and wait for "Ya done now?" and just take it in stride. No reboot.

In addition Windows is tied to a chipset/cpu because they see this as a guard against piracy. Linux has none of that crap. This is only a small part of why "Linux is Free" has FAR more meaning as it applies to Freedom rather than cost.

I'm sure I'm being stupid...but can someone help me with figuring out a way to either script or have programs remember a priority that I set them to? Also, it was something that I noticed when I was using E17 a while ago...but it set the DE/WM processes to a priority of -3 while I've noticed KDE just uses 0; could this further explain why E17 seems faster besides being "lighter"?

I do a lot of distro hopping and like to stand at the bleeding edge, so, in average I roll distros every 6 month.

Swap installations, multiboot and still manage all your daily data may require an easy "trick"

Place common "home" folders in a separate partition and keep all your data in it.

After a new install, create a folder at "home" and add a line in fstab to mount said partition in the new folder, at start-up.

Folders in "home" at the new install, that have the same name as those in the separate partition need to be deleted and replaced with simlinks to those in the partition.
