I'm on Skype for hours at a time some times over 8 hours a day. Skype in Linux will freeze the entire OS once I'm about 20 mins into a call. This happens with all the *buntu's I tried. Also tried to fix the issue in Linux with no success. So I decided just to run a Win Skype box as it's critical that I have reliable Skype access

It's Ubuntu being crappy. I've used Skype for hours on end on ArchLinux to chat to my mrs back when she was studying in Germany. Skype worked flawlessly.

[edit]
In fact she used Skype on Linux too (Xandras - EeePC pre-install)

Maybe it's time for me to move away from Ubuntu.

Hmm i've never had any problem with skype in ubuntu (not since they got the whole alsa/pulse thing sorted). Could be the change in how they are doing multilib lately, i've noticed in other programs, that is becoming a hassle, hope they get that sorted soon as well.

But if you are looking for something nice, I've been using fedora lately :)

Do you stay on skype calls for a long period of time? Skype works for about the first 20 mins for me. I really need to venture away from my Ubuntu safety net that I've built around my-self over the past few years. thumb.gif

Do you see the pattern there? You're trying it on the same base system with different Desktop Environments.

I'm with plan9, I use it on my Arch machines for hours at a time and no problem. tongue.gif

works fine in debian as well. hen again, few of my calls go over 20min, but even if i've had problems nothing in skype has ever frozen the whole os before.
