XFCE doesn't have vsync, it's one of the problems with it. mplayer has advanced options but you either have to use one of the GUI tools or set them manually. I prefer the GUI tools, only run mplayer manually when I'm testing stuff quick or it doesn't normally work as I'm too lazy to find out what GUI options are enabled that breaks the video. =P

in response to the poll.

I dislike this debate for one big reason, a distro is so much more than the kernel and the userspace, yes without them you wouldn't have a distro, but there are so many tools and components that a distro uses that don't belong to either project.

i say let the distro's decide what to call themselves, if they want to the sher's and madonna's of the distro world and just call themselves "ubuntu" or "fedora" i say let them, if they want to honor two of the biggest contributors to their base, and call themselves debian GNU/Linux, let them, or they just want to honor one of them and call themselves linux mint or arch linux, who am i to question their motives, as most people who get into these debates to always to fail to consider the most important aspect, these people of that distro are the ones who do all the grunt work, go out, put all the pieces to the great puzzle together and then take the time to package it all up for us to see and use as easily as human possible.

i'd personally next, would like to see the poll be "is android a linux distro?" cause i see a lot of reference it being linux, yeah it runs its kernel, but it is still just a java stack ontop of a linux kernel, it is missing a lot of things in it that i would say would make a linux distro. :)

Not really. Something either falls in kernel space or user space. It can't really sit outside of those two areas without being external to the OS entirely (eg online clouds).

Almost all Linux distros are based on the GNU / GPL user land so they are GNU/Linux. Android is Android/Linux. It's still a Linux distribution but it's not a GNU/Linux distribution.

Let's also be clear that you can have the whole GNU / GPL user land (ie what people mistakenly refer to as Linux) without the Linux kernel. eg GNU/kFreeBSD (GNU user land, FreeBSD kernel) and GNU/Hurd (Hurd kernel).

I think a lot of people try to over complicate what Linux is and what can be classed as a Linux distribution. But I think it's quite simple: anything running on top of a Linux kernel is a Linux distribution. Anything using the GNU / GPL user land is a GNU distribution. So nearly all the desktop and server Linuxes are GNU/Linux. Android is Android/Linux. And so on.

So Vsync can't be enabled on the driver level? I thought since it's possible with the proprietary drivers, that it would be (although trickier) possible on the open source drivers too.

yep, but not what i meant. i understand how the OS works, i know something can only exist in kernel or userspace, its why i mentioned without GNU or Linux, you wouldn't have much of a distro :).

Just saying there are a lot of important pieces to the puzzle that make up a distro, I personally don't call it GNU/Linux, I rarely even call it "linux" that much, I'll say the distro's name most of the time, unless it actually has Linux as part of its name, like linux mint or arch linux.

As for android, i guess it is just a pet peeve of mine, on how insanely popular it is, and to me its just a java stack ontop of a hacked linux kernel :). I have an android 10 inch tablet, after a few weeks, i got bored with it, and threw on a arm edition of ubuntu, you have no idea how useful it is now! :) i can not wait till some one out there comes out with a tablet that only comes with a linux distro on it (yeah they exist, i've seen them, but they are so underpowered or craptastically made they aren't worth it imho). I know i'd prolly be the only one waiting at the store at 4 am for it to open the day of their launch, but i'd buy 10 of them :).

I kind of agree with plan9 in that adroind uses the linux kernel, and there for is a linux distro, although not a GNU one

I can see what you mean about some system tools not being GNU but lets face it, with out the GNU any unix-like desktop system today would not even be close to as good or well developed. the distro maker can call it, but referring to arch/debian/ubuntu/fedora together I do think it should be called GNU/Linux.

as for android, I'm going to ask this- you might hate it, but is it better then iOS? I'm going to guess most linux GNU/Linux users would say yes.
I personally enjoy iOS much better. Just seems smoother and more polished. Note, I'm currently typing this from my Android phone ( Boost Mobile ZTE Warp ).

Though they are much closer related than you seem to think, judging by the last comment

I'm still voting for a new name that's easier to pronounce than "GNU slash Linux" though "GNU+Linux" makes more sense to me...I mean slash makes it sound like you're either dividing or separating things. Gnulix, Gnulinux, Linugnu, or how about LiGNUx (pronounced Lie+nukes).

I have an iphone, but I would trade it for a decent android in a day- its an opinion thing I guess. I love being able to torrent movies school projects from my friends directly to the device. on iOS because I won't jailbreak I have to kump though hoops to get any files to a 3rd party player

I should have made that in the poll, I always just call it gnu linux (no dash)

I will agree with your points on iOS. iOS seems to have a good "fit and finish" and since they make the hardware, have limited platform flavors to support they can get that higher level of polish. Android trades that level of polish for a broad spectrum of hardware options and customizability for users to craft their own experience. That's the core trade offs between the devices leaving the pool of apps available in their respective "stores/repositories" aside....to me at least.
