I was thinking Ubuntu should do since I know it well, any other recommendations?
Uses include but are not limited to:
- Folding
- Minecraft
- Possible Source games
- Possible WoW
- Video Encoding
- Web Server (Apache2 for personal use)
- File Server on a primarily Windows Network
- HTPC in computer room
- Email Server (no idea how to set on up)

Ubuntu will do pretty much everything you want. There is now quite a large community for gaming, see here: http://www.steamgamesonlinux.com/

Skype on linux has been stuck at 2.2 Beta for forever, but I've been having trouble with the icon and unity since my mistaken upgrade to 11.10/11.04. What are you having trouble with? Certainly plenty of us here to help wink.gif

If only everything was java based... Im just starting programing, but im focusing on that. Software should be free, open source and avlable on as many platforms as possable. Sounds like a crazy dream. With all this metro stuff, im think ms might be trying to force a new standerd only avalable on windows. Then to use the stuff youll need a windows pc tablet and phone.. The whole package. All ready even we are tied to windows due to lack of support for things like games and with more stuff built on microsoft standerds like silverlight and metro, There trying make there monopoly a little bigger. While ive never been a fan of macs, you got to give to to apple that there still there and big enough to make a differance. I hope windows 8 and metro fail. Ms wanted to make new software work on both windows and windows on arm, and guess what? there is something already here called java. But no, to try and kill ios mac os andriod and linux if we're more then buggs to them, they invent a while new standerd.

I wouldn't worry about it too much jrl1357, Microsoft has always been that way and always will be. Microsoft and Apple both have the issue that they are companies - money grubbing entities. They could care less about the betterment of society let alone actual forward movement in the development of computers. They only care to just barely be better than the competition.

Oh and Java is our main programming language here at EIU for CS students thumb.gif

Too many people think that Java isn't Bleeding Edge enough, especially fans of first person shooters have stated I've found. Really though, knowing a language is such a small part of understanding a computer. And yes, Java is amazing for the JVM which makes it so very portable.

What version of ALSA do you have? Are you using a USB mic?

Edit: Actually, this might be good to move to a thread to get other's input in the Linux section.

In. I use Mint but only for kernel developing. I do not like the 12 very much, 11 was better imo. Plus I have a bug with ethernet. Other than that its pretty good.
