Budget build for a friend

Thread Starter
My friend is looking to upgrade from his laptop because it gets disgusting FPS in SWTOR so I told him I'd look into it. His price range was 600-700. I made a build on newegg and although the total was 700, after taxes and S&H it comes out to 800. Maybe someone can give me some advice to knock off a few bucks or advise me on some better components. Thanks in advance.

CPU: Intel i5-2500k $220 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072

Cooler: The standard Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus $30

Video Card: EVGA GTX 550 Ti $140 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130625

Motherboard: ASRock Z68 Extreme 3 Gen 3 $122 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157271
(Note: I was gonna go with the Gigabyte GA-Z68XP but some reviews I read said it had compatibility issues with the GTX 550 for some strange reason)

HDD: He's already got a 7200rpm hard drive I'm gonna use

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws series 8GB $47 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314

PSU: Corsair TX650 $90 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139020

Case: Antec Three Hundred Illusion Black Steel ATX Mid Tower $55 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129066

All for a grand total of $704

A 2500K would be more than enough for that video card, so you could maybe cut there.

A 2300 would save you $50; a 2400 would save $30.

Cutting the 2500K is definitely a valid option, but that just makes me cringe. You could also drop the RAM down to 4GB instead of 8GB (and you'd be fine with 1333Mhz).

I really think the minimum amount of RAM for a gaming rig these days is 8 GB. I'd be much more willing to cut the CPU in this case, but that's just my two cents. wink.gif

Most games won't even touch more than 2GB of RAM -- they aren't designed to -- meaning you've got a couple gigabytes sitting around idling.

Skyrim and STALKER regularly use over 2 GB on my system, and since Windows 7 uses over 1 GB just running...you can start to run into problems.

I agree. You've got your game taking up 2GB, the system using about 1GB, and if you have a web browser idling in the background that's also taking up a lot of resources which results in the full 4gb being used. You'll find yourself capping a lot which will create drops in fps. 8gb is the new 4gb.

I really don't wanna cut back on the processor cause the 2500k is the staple of gaming processors and I feel like it's the only part of a computer you should never skimp on. My main focuses were maybe finding a better motherboard in that same price range, preferably Z68 chipset.

Also I wish I lived near a microcenter so I could grab the i5, but sadly I live in the country.

This build is for SWTOR and your getting a 550ti with a 2500k? Thats an odd combination. I think you would be much better off with a lower processor and a higher gpu.

So the difference in performance between a 2500k ($219) and an Phenom X4 ($124) is ~12%
That is $95 for 12% performance.

The difference between a 550 Ti ($120) and a 560 Ti ($210) is roughly 90%
That is $90 for 90% performance.

Where my conclusion came from (Click to show)
Here is how I got my results.
CPU
2500k is great, no doubt about that. However, there was a test on clock speeds and cores.
Source

GPU
I took the mean of performance between a 6850 and a 6970, which is probably on the light side of a 6950. The 560 Ti is comparable to a 6950. That was actually like a 91% increase in performance.
Source

Result
The conclusion should explain my opinion. "Low cpu requirements, but mid range graphics recommended"
