computer randomly shuts down

Thread Starter
problem;

random computer shut down without restart, without BSOD. one time i unplug the wireless usb receiver it shut down. sometimes stay on for 15 hours no problem sometimes shuts off in 5 minutes.

spec:

amd 9950 BE 140w (3 years old overclocked before try to blow it up at 1.55v), now no OC but it's stable with prime 95.
4gb corsair xms2 dual channel
600w emacs power supply (5 years old)
asus m3n72-d (3 years old)
corsair a70 (one fan only)
antec 300 (all fan unplugged)
ocz vertex plus 120gb
xfx 9800gtx+

temperature is not a problem even without all those fans. 20-24 degrees idle and 36 degrees load, rooom temperature 15 degrees.

here are the things i tried

1. replaced power supply, same thing
2. took video card out and use onboard, same thing.
3. change ram to different slot and try different ram, same thing.
4. change between magnetic disk and that ocz one, same thing.

the cpu was running 60+ degrees for a while before i realize it was overheating with the gtx 590 which is in a much better home now. the gtx 590 was with the 9950 in stock cooler and no front fan. tried to overclock after running years at 50 degreeish for a month or so. not stable sometimes still get through the day.

i am thinking it's the cpu or motherboard. what do you guys think? don't want to replace it as the temperature is so good.

right now i reset the bios and its better. before it shuts off before going to windows. after rest bios it will go in windows. can play games no problem but sometimes stuck on something then shuts off. quite strange symptoms.

i've had 3 amd in the pass 5 years and non of them are stable til this day. i have some company beater computer p4 still working til this day. i just got those like a year ago. they have been running 24/7 for years.

well lesson learnt on keeping things cool.

the corsair a70 is amazing. so amazing you don't need case fans. i was gonna go fanless but then have to connect one fan.

Hmm, it could be a grounding issue. Do you have all of your standoffs properly set up and screwed into the motherboard? Also, have you tried a different outlet if available?

there was one screw not put in in the motherboard to case contact. i forgot to put it in because the a70 was in the way. let's hope that's it.

i had this MB in the level 10 for a few days before.

yes had this in my room outlet now it's outside in the dining room outlet. so outlet is fine.

Hi
I put the screw on and seem good now. Left it downloading torrent for 12 hours and came home still running. Can you elaborate why the screw is important? I Google search what happens when one screw not placed. And the only answers are not good for the strength of the pcb.
Thanks

I've been having the same issue for about half a year. Sometimes its fine for a week, other times it does the "no-warning-no-error-shutoff" 3 times in an hour.

What should I check for in terms of this screw? I know that all of them are in, but is there anything else.

(sorry if this is a thread-jack).

i can't imagine a single screw would make a difference in the mobo being properly grounded, unless there was something else pulling it away and the 1 screw secured everything just right.
Only way to test and see if the screw did anything is let it run. If it still shuts off, pull the mobo out and run it on a cardboard box and see if it still does it. If it does, you know it's not a grounding issue.

Just because you don't see a BSOD doesn't mean there wasn't one. Check your C:\Windows\Minidump folder and see if there are any files in there.

@doomlord52

the one that i forgot to put in is the one right above the heatsink.

no washers are used. there are some metal soldering around the screw holes on the MB make sure the screw touches that directly.

yeah it's been a week and i was downloading 30gb of torrent stuff and no shut down. no freeze, all good. will give the computer to my mom now.

5 years from now she wants to have my LGA2011 lol. probably piece of crap by then.
