Microsoft's Internet Explorer regained some of the browser usage it's lost in recent years, holding Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Safari at bay in March.

IE rose from 52.8 percent of worldwide browser usage in February to 53.8 percent in March, a relatively large monthly jump in the statistics tracked by Net Applicaitons.

Meanwhile, the top four rivals dropped: Firefox from 20.9 percent to 20.6 percent, Chrome from 18.9 percent to 18.6 percent, Safari from 5.2 percent to 5.1 percent, and Opera from 1.7 percent to 1.6 percent.

IE9 is actually a pretty nice browser..... Seems like the public is waking up to the nonsense that ZOMG CHROMEFOX IS BETTAR!!

I'm still on Chrome. I feel like it's too little too late from them. IE9 very well may be an amazing browser but I have no complaints about chrome thus no reason to leave.

Pretty funny though that the general concensus seems to be Chrome is where it's at but in terms of total market share IE still dominates.

Pre-installed IE vs Download-and-install-to-use every other browser.

Chrome actually comes pre-installed on many retail computers now, at least at Best Buy they do.

Or because the vast majority of computer users (read: the vast majority of IE users) are still noobs, and still noobily using the browser that's preinstalled on every computer?

Windows' large marketshare is and always has been most of the reason for IE's subsequently large marketshare.

I use Chrome with few extensions. Does the job. I don't care about much else.
I have noticed that when doing fresh installs on PCs at work it asks which browsers you'd like to install, interesting that is.

an opinion is still an opinion, even if you use italics and call people who choose to use IE 'noobs' who apparently don't know there are other browsers out there rolleyes.gif I suppose my 5+ years in the tech industry and 2.5 years here on OCN isn't yet enough experience for me to escape the clutches of noobishness, so I will continue to noobily use my noobish browser because like the other noobs this noob doesn't know there are any other browsers out there... rolleyes.gif

I think that is perhaps one of the more valid points so far made about browsers. IE7 and IE8 were, personally, pretty bad and that's when Chrome and FF really shrunk IE's stranglehold on the market. Now that people are used to browsers that are not Internet Explorer and that are just as fast and user friendly and available, people see no reason to jump ship back to IE. I think that is going to be the biggest hurdle for Microsoft to overcome, creating a product that makes people want to leave other browsers for the features and functionality of IE. They don't have it yet, but they certainly upped their game with IE9 to create a browser on par with (if not better than) the other choices.

A surprise for me was the popularity of Opera Mini for a mobile browser. I've seen a few people mention it around here, but I've either used Blackberry's browser (when I had my BB for three years) or the stock Android browser (for the last 4 months or so). I found the browser was acceptable for my uses, so just like jtom320 said about having no complaints and no reason to leave I had no reason to look elsewhere. But with that many people using Opera Mini, I might have to download it and give it a whirl, even though I don't use the mobile internet all that often, could be worth a looksee smile.gif

I just want to point out that most people dont care what browser they use so before you criticize people for noobishly using a pre installed browser, just keep in mind that most people dont care at all about browsers.

That said, I prefer to use IE9 because its easier to use for the things I want it to do. If chrome made it less clicks to zoom a page in and out, id probably ditch IE for chome.
