[CNET] Say Hello to the Brave New World of Console Gaming - Page 5

If you limit the sale of your games, developers can't make money, and if developers can't make money, developers lose interest and stop making titles for that platform. If microsoft/sony decide to be greedy to the extreme, everybody loses. It simply means that microsoft/sony are no longer competing with game resellers on their products. They're simply competing with themselves, which will probably result in less profits than they're getting with this generation of consoles.
While Microsoft/Sony may control pricing, it's always been up to the consumer to pay for a game only when it has reached a price point that they deem it worthwhile. The consumer will still win if they wait long enough.

I wouldn't say more than likely. One of the reasons I so heavily support Steam and have been able to expand my game library so much is because of their steam sales. Consoles have always had high pricing for games, and I don't think console pricing will ever come on par with Steam, unless they some how start directly competing and Steam becomes the DD market leader for consoles by a massive margin.

While its going to be funny to watch all the console kids whine and cry about the crack down on used games, going to digital distribution and locking games to accounts is only going to give Microsoft and Sony the keys to set the prices at whatever they want. PC is an open platform and that is why Steam became so successful. The same openness is not available on consoles, and we will likely see little to no influence on pricing or sales carry over from steam to these new consoles.

Actually, the arcitecture wasn't that much different:

Both made by IBM and both sporting the "PowerPC" architecture. For nintendo, backwards compatibility was easy with the Wii.

Love how people are in an downright uproar over this and slamming consoles, and yet turn around and praise PC and point to steam as the way forward.

Last I checked, short of selling your unique user id (aka your account) you can't sell used games on steam. If I remember rihgt, people were upset about that too when it was announced, and now no one even considers it.

Point is we don't need to buy used games because they go on sale on Steam for $7.

I wouldn't be surprised if the online servers for the current systems were shutdown shortly after release of the next gen (1 year) to facilitate a change and gain $$.

If this actually comes to light and we are no longer allowed to buy used games or even play without internet connection, I will stop buying games all together. This royally pisses me off.

A pirates life for me it is!

Companies want their cake and to eat it too....they want you to be forced to buy a new game, via a download service, and to always be online.

I am fine with this if all the game/music/movie distributers pulled their collective heads out of their butts and dropped the prices to reasonable levels for digital content that costs them next to nothing to distribute.

The less expensive media is the more of it will be bought, the less of it will be pirated, the less they will feel they have to invest in DRM.

It is pretty obvious that we are moving towards digital distibtuion for all forms of media/software, but the pricing models need to change from what they are currently. It is a very different way of doing business now.

You're missing the point.

When new console hardware is released most of your games are worthless on the new hardware.

When new PC hardware is released I can still play old games.

And of course there are exceptions to this, but not many.

They said exactly the same thing about the PS3 and did it happen? No. I have serious doubts this is ever going to happen.
