GTX 460 SLI upgrade to 680?

Thread Starter
Hi overclockers! smile.gif

Like the others, I am wondering whether or not to upgrade to a GTX 680.

- On a i5 2500k OC'd to 4.7ghz

- Currently using 2 GTX 460's 1gb SLI

- I am using 2 24' benq monitors @ 1920 x 1080, at 120hz each.

- I play mostly Battlefield 3 and will be playing Diablo 3 and Guildwars 2 when they are released.

My questions..

1. Will I see a performance increase upgrading to a single GTX 680? Or what card should I get?

2. Is my Corsair 650AX Gold PSU good enough?

3. What is VRAM? And what is the difference between 2GB VRAM and 3GB?

4. 680 or 7970? Best bang for my buck? smile.gif

Any information would be great!

  1. The GTX680 is currently the best single GPU solution out there, and beats the 7970 15-20%(stock vs stock) depending upon games.
  2. More than enough for a single 680, it's very power efficient and greener than the 7970.
  3. VRAM is the buffer that a discreet GPU(Graphics Processing Unit) uses to store information while processing it, for e.g game levels/objects/etc
  4. 680 if the other one you are considering is the 7970. The 680 can be had for ~$500, whereas the 7970 is still $550+ depending upon models. Both the cards OCs like there's no tomorrow, and ~1150 is viable if you are on air, and 1200+ if your shooting for WC.

A 680 would be a good upgrade from two 460s. The extra vram will help if you run a multi monitor setup because the vram will really take a hit at a resolution like 5760x1080.
you dont have three monitors but if you decided to get a third you would be better off with the 2gb of vram from the 680. plus you can get another one in the future if you upgrade your psu.
however i dunno if they are even in stock anywhere as of now.

the 7970 would be a good upgrade also but its more expensive than the 680 and will require an active display port adapter to run three monitors. of course all of this doesnt matter if you dont use 3 monitors.

EDIT: nvm about the display port adapter. apparently the 7970s (at least the ones i just looked at) come with an active display port adapter. seems the 7950s do not. redface.gif

A single 680 is ~ the same as SLI'd 480's and ~25% faster than a single 580. So it would be a huge upgrade.
I'd upgrade. I would always go for the single card solution over SLI or crossfire if you can help it and afford it.

I would also choose a 680 over a 7970, the drivers for the 7970 are terrible.

If you have already decided your upgrading, go with the GTX 680 over the AMD card for sure. Better price for performance. You would benefit from having more Vram, especialy in BF3 with multiple monitors as well.

Although, if your not pressing to upgrade I would wait for GK110 rather than spending $500 on a single GTX 680 coming from SLI 460's. In my opinion, while there is definitely an increase in power, there is not a $500 difference right now. GK110 will bring that worth to you in August.

Just my two cents. Unless you have a compelling reason to upgrade now... wait.

Not consistently, there are a few games where my old GTX560 non-ti sli which are essentally overclocked GTX460s were faster than my GTX680. For example Stalker Clear Sky and Just Cause 2 in 3d. The GTX680 isn't exactly impressive in Metro 2033 either. I'm sure that there are other titles.

Don't get me wrong it would be an upgrade but not always that big of an upgrade.

Awesome, thanks for all the information! Will be heading for the 680 then!

1) If I ever plan to SLI the GTX 680, what size PSU should I be looking for? (Currently on a AX 650w corsair Gold)

2) GK110 - What do you think the price range on these will be?

With a 2500k, I would get a good 750 or 850 PSU for SLI 680s. I am running a 2500k @ 5ghz, and two 7970s on a Seasonic X750 gold at the moment without issue.
