[LR] NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 Surround Gaming Tested

When we reviewed the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 graphics card we covered many of the features, but one feature that we didn't have the time to test for the launch article was NVIDIA Surround. The GeForce GTX 680 has the ability to run 3D Vision Surround off a single card! As you can imagine, this makes for a richer gaming experience and something that wasn't previously possible with an NVIDIA video card that was powered by just a single-GPU.

FINALLY:. maximize windows to a single display..

before, back in the day, i had a 3 monitor setup, and it sucked, because maximizing a window would stretch across all 3.

Sold the monitors because of that reason :b

I would probably get 680 (as its 100$ cheaper and I'm price sensitive) if it could run 5x1 portrait surround. Its a bit unfortunate that for that kind of stuff AMD is still the only option - competition in this regard would be good.

And you can do less than fullscreen maximize with eyefinity as well, although it takes some additional setting up (HydraGrid, for example)

Kinda interesting at 5760x1080 the 680 won three tests, the 7970 won three tests and two were a wash. Not to mention the 7970 was the highest overclocked factory cards versus stock clocked 680's. wink.gif

Does this mean we should be going 7970 lightning for 1600p and up resolutions? For BF3?

It depends. The lightning is already overclocked and much closer to it's limit versus the 680's that are stock in this test. Although the 7970 does put up a nice fight in Eyefinity, I'd give a slight edge to the 680. Oh and BTW they ran the HAWX Demo at 8x AA and you can see the 2GB of memory hamper the 680 because of needless AA. No one in their right mind runs Surround/Eyefinity with 8x AA, what a waste.

If you think .9 fps is worth the extra $100 then yes... I guess

Is it worth the extra overclock headroom vs the 680's?
Depends on personal preference really. A reference 7970 hits 1250 easily. The Lightning is more for LN2 or super quiet air cooling. If you're at triple 1600p resolutions, Nvidia does fare better with each monitor on its own RAMDAC rather than everything running off the first card. Nvidia handles MSAA better than AMD with less of a performance hit. That's why 0xMSAA and FXAA comparisons see the 7xxx cards pull way ahead in tests but don't do so good when MSAA is on. 3D gaming is also better on Nvidia but you have to shell out additional money for their branded gear. Nvidia drivers tend to be much smoother and less buggy, as far as installing/changing settings and less micro-stutter.

Reference 680s can't overclock very much due to their low amount of VRMs and OCP that can't be disabled, so a reference 1250mhz 7950/7970 will easily beat it in single monitor comparisons without having to worry about killing VRMs. There's a couple non-ref models like the 1.2Ghz Zotac out though that let you overclock well and the 680 Lightning will be out in a couple months. You just have to choose what fits for your setup. Are you using triple 1600p monitors? Are you looking to do 3D gaming?
