I do find it funny how so many people on here are just upset with Metro. I could only hope this means more Linux converts so we could finally have a sizable user base that would get 3rd parties and hardware makers to offer better drivers (not that they're terrible now but they could use improvement) and more.

This is really the issue. What choices are there on the x86 side? Linux, which is still have audio driver issues solved in Windows circa 1993, and...well that's it. So the choice is stick on windows 7 or xp until a real windows comes out, get 8 and suffer through it or join the chaos of Linux. What's that ubuntu interface called? Unity? Looks like as many complaints about that as metro. Maybe even more...

Oh, and if I've learned anything from slashdot.org even if we get more 3rd parties writing drivers linux users will just keep complaining because they're not "free and open". Barrier to entry I think is what I'm trying to say. Sorry if I'm off topic.

It depends. If it is capable of running Xbox games then I'd be able to play Halo whether it's for PC or not. That is the deciding factor honestly...

I will definitely not be buying Windows 8 unless they change some things.

If they're going to make an OS primarily based on a phone's interface, and try to sell it to me, I'm not buying it. I love the task bar and refuse to part with it.

I've got no reason to get 8, in fact I'm still running XP. I've hated Vista and don't like 7 very much. Based on microsoft's history, it looks like 8 will be crap and I'm not looking to change my OS, so there's a very small chance that I will even consider buying it. Probably wouldn't even use it if MS paid me triple the price they'd charge.

But then they would lose out on all of their console sales.. Not going to happen, their current one kills itself with the RROD so they've even got multiple purchases by many of the same people.

Perhaps they'd like to introduce this feature if they could re-sell you the OS every time you reformatted?

No.

I have a multi-core, water cooled, over clocked, custom modded PC, not a freaking tablet.

I have zero interest in an operating system that has been designed for an idiot who barely knows how to operate a cell phone.

I'll keep my Windows 7 until Windows 9 comes out ... and if Microsoft doesn't straighten out their act and get back with the program, I will shift over to a less ugly version of Linux and just keep running Windows 7 for games only.

While I doubt most of us will be too pleased with it as an everyday desktop environment, it seems like it has potential on the home theater front and for that I would consider using it for my HTPC. If it ends up being terrible, then of course I won't bother and it is incredibly unlikely I will be switching to it on my desktop.

All the under-the-hood enhancements might be nice for gaming, but I plan to use my machine to to actual work. Since you cannot have more than two programs on-screen at once in Windows 8 I would call it a dual-tasking OS (as opposed to a multi-tasking OS like every version of Windows since 3.1). I've played with the preview, and was frankly not impressed. I mean I can't even have a Skype conversation, watch my email, edit an image in Photoshop, and look up something if I get stuck using Chrome simultaneously! I just don't see any of the UI changes in 8 as useful, and many of them will stand between me and things I've been able to do on any computer for the past 2 decades. Here's hoping someone works out a way to run it without Metro...

I actually had to do an analysis of Windows 8 for work as well (I'm a sysadmin most of the day). I've already changed the upgrade cycle on workstations to make sure we have all our machines running 7/Office 2010 by the end of the month and ensured all existing hardware will be able to remain useful for the next 5 years ( to wait out a fix or new OS). Trust me, it was way cheaper to order dozens of Ivy Bridge i5s than it would have been to train laymen (not to mention executives!) to use this blasted OS. I've also been working on my Linux server skills as they are about to bork Windows Server as well so I've been asked to come up with plans to migrate many of our services onto a new OS.

All of this could have been avoided if M$ had listened to user input early in the development process when these new "features" were being discussed. I don't think this is going to be as bad as Windows ME, but we are looking at another public relations fail on the scale of Vista (which they've largely fixed these days so there may yet be some hope). Why M$, why do you have such contempt for users and administrators?

Meh, I used XP 64bit all the way up to a year after Windows 7 came out. And was in no hurry to update. I think I can live with Windows 7 for a few more years. I still use XP on my laptop, but because I dont need all the bells and whistles. I only use it for general web browsing.
