Gaming experience from Athlon 64 X2 4800+ to Phenom II X4 965 ? - Page 2

I thing you guys are not understanding what the OP needs. Just by looking at his sig and reading his first post you can tell he is not going to shell out cash for a new mobo/cpu and ram. All he needs is a faster CPU to get better frame rates for both games suggested above. He clearly has a nice bottleneck that can easily be loosened up by upgrading his CPU.

I think his mobo only supports AM2, which is why everyone was recommending a new mobo as well.

You have a point. I had some cash for an upgrade, that i "wasted" in a new graphic card.
I have read posts, search the web for SCI tests, thus I am interested by the i3, but that would mean :
- i3 (110 euros) + mobo (80 euros ?) + 4-8 Go Ram DDR3 (70-100 euros) = 250-280 euros.
- fresh install of windows 7 (because new mobo) = 287 updates + all my current softwares and this would be clearly a pain for me. Add to this I can't find for the moment my W7 + Adobe CS4 licence (product key), so I'm ****ed.

And in an other way, I feel disgusted, having thrown that cash in such a (underused) graphic card that does not help me. And that's my fault I know.

seems to be the Phenom II X4 965 BE
I have checked on asus forum, it seems to work.

But I'm not still out of hell.
- by the SCII tests, a quad core is a waste, so i could go with the X2 555... (what about the incoming games like diablo III ? use of quad core ?)
- i will need to flash the BIOS ; i have never done that, and it's a bit scary. (something goes wrong, you're ****ed)
- some feedback users tell that the 965 stock cooler is very loud, loudness (or quietness) is an important factor ; so i could add a noctua cooler (50 euros)
- i could be then very borderline from a PSU point (mine is antec 500 w) (80 euros)
Add the 110 euros for the 965 and we're in the 230 euros range...

I wish I could find a real and stable solution for 100 or 130 euros, but there's a risk if i only go for the CPU.

I know that's a lot of points to avercome, but I can't stay like that. I think of that nearly all my day work...

Upgrading to dualcore today is a waste of money. Quad or nothing smile.gif
Also, you're interpreting wrongly the SC2 benches. They don't mean a quad is useless. They mean that Intel SB dualcore performs like AMD PhII quad. AMD PhII dualcore will be twice worse.

Was just playing Starcraft 2 10 minutes before writing this and i was getting 100+ with Vsync off and i have a Phenom ii x4 940 Black edition AM2+ overclocked from 3.0Ghz to 3.6Ghz and everything runs smooth as butter with my GTX580 you will see huge improvements going to Quad core mate i think you should look for a Phenom ii 940 or 945 or go for a AMD Athlon X2 7850 BE i used to have your motherboard and ran the 7850 at 3.2GHZ and it worked like a dream think you can pick them up real cheap is more or less a phenom 1 cut in half.

Go for a Phenom II X4 945, I noticed a huge improvement from my Athlon 5000+ BE (overclocked to 3.4Ghz) to my Athlon II X3 450.. So a full fat Phenom II x4 will be miles better, it will not be noticeably slower with DDR2 ram instead of DDR3, Updating the BIOS is nice and easy on Asus boards just go here and download the 5001 BIOS. Extreact it to fat formatted usb stick, then enter the BIOS and open EZ Flash Utility, just select the only file that appears (It will be a .rom file) and hit enter.. Asus boards always verify the BIOS file first so no worries..

I went from an X2 6400+ to an X4 955 and the difference in gaming was like night and day - even with the same 8800 GTX. I gained about 25% in FPS in Oblivion and Fallout 3 at the time with that same GPU. Made me sad to think how long the old 8800 GTX had been choked down by the Athlon. Going from an X2 4800+ to an X4 965 is going to be huge.
