[DLZ]SETI Institute Wants Help Sorting Through ‘Flood’ of New Signals - Page 2

SETI=Sorting of Everyone's Transmitted Information..lol

To the OP, Dateline Zero is not a credible or reliable news source.

I thought SETI was closed down? They've been around a while and haven't found anything. They've been looking for ETs this way since the 60s. It would be more beneficial to us to do Folding@Home than this any day. wink.gif

Respectable opinion, and I agree, DLZ is not a credible news source, however it does link to newsday, and through newsday to the setilive.org website. While I agree folding at home is an important project, it doesn't really have much to do with SETI.

The universe is quite vast, and even with close to or over 50 years of searching, I imagine we have only begun to sctrach the surface of all the radio signals and observeable information that current and past technology will allow us to analyze

Unless you could fold a protien that could decode radio signals from space wink.gif (don't take this as me being a jerk, but this thread is about SETI, not F@H)

Cheers! cheers.gif

EDIT: I will add the link to newsday through the article for those who may have missed it.

Here's my take on SETI. From what I understand, the closest habitable planet is ~80 light years away. Most others are hundreds of light years away and farther. Even if we found a signal worthy of monitoring, it would be well over 100 years old or more. We could possibly learn from it, but to make contact would be out of the question. For example, we receive a signal 160 years old (160+ light years away). It would take another 160+ years to broadcast back to them, if possible. To travel to this planet would take anywhere upwards to 2-3 times the years to get there. Logically, it's a waste of time. There are thousands of other things infinitely more important. We will make contact when we're capable of leaving this planet for permanent space exploration and safely traveling extremely fast.

I'd personally much rather cure cancer and other fatal diseases. Making contact with SETI@Home is a pipe dream, at best. tongue.gif

Once again a respectable opinion, and I tend to agree that solving problems towards curing diseases and cancer is quite important. I also believe that if there are not individuals out there that are willing to diversify the portfolio of computing power for number crunching purposes we become too one dimensional. People are needed for both, and while curing ailments is more important to some in the more immediate future, I do not believe that means other forms of processing power utilization should be dismissed.

With current technology and methods you are absolutely correct, however; is the purpose of identifying these signals really to facillitate communication with an 'alien' species? Or is the purpose more to the point of proving one of the quintessential questions of our time? Whether or not we are alone in this universe? I don't think anyone would argue that current technology makes it all but impossible to communicate, let alone travel to these bodies in the sky.

Off topic:
Also I tend to think that as much as we like to believe these issues are insurmontable, look how far technology has come in the past 50 years? I think it would be highly dismissing to believe that some innovator may not be working on an idea or a patent that can change the world, http://www.iter.org/ for example (I am also working on 2 patents that I hope to publish soon). Granted while i can see your point of view, under the pretenses for your reasoning, I still believe that you may not be giving enough credit to human inguenuity and creativity. It is easy to be a cynic while looking at articles and making conjecture with numbers that make sense.

While you personally much rather cure cancer and other diseases, I personally much rather answer these questions about our universe. smile.gif

We're not alone in our universe. When anyone with half a mind looks up into the night sky, they see all of the stars (suns of possible habitable planets). Habitable planets have also been recently found. To receive a signal from deep space wouldn't surprise most. It would make for great news and speculation though. I feel that today's society isn't looking to prove life elsewhere from the ground. It's looking for deep space exploration to finally begin. You want to find signals? Well, you need to go to the source. It's time to move into this century and leave the last behind. SETI has proven time and again to be a complete waste of time, money, and resources. It's time that we unass our planet and get a move on around our universe. wink.gif
