Kentsfield is in the house! - Page 16

At least with domestic sellers, US laws apply uniformly to both parties. Also, most people are reasonable and are willing to work with buyers. However, IF the guy is a scammer AND since he's international, there's no easy way to force him to give a refund. He's going to try to talk to the guy, of course, and see if he stands behind the sale. If the guy chooses not to, he has another line of defense if he used a credit card as most CC companies have good fraud policies. Beyond that, calling the guy out on the site the purchase was made on may be his best recourse.

Wowza is definitely not going to sit on his butt and take a huge financial hit. Hopefully the guy will be cool about it, but only time will tell.

B. It's a really old processor because it has a bad OCing stepping. (can't manage more than 2.66). Crappy Pre-Production stepping like most ES processors you will find from intel.
C. It could actually be an ES processor, because some ES processors (expecially pre-ES processor releases) have locked multi's.
D. It's probably not a Kentsfield, but better, because it was made with dual CPU compatibility vs. the Kentsfield which is stictly desktop 1U usage.
E. We will soon all realize that CPUZ doesn't know everything and it does make mistakes.

Yay, we can now argue again.
Theres no need to argue, i did what i needed to help you out. Simply by determining whelter if its Kentsfield or not, ES or not. Now its up to you to decide if you want to take this matter to the seller or not. Like you Chozart said, you already admitted that its not Kentsfield, you are certain that its not Retail or OEM because you still have faith into the seller.

I can't help you further with that. That is beyond me now.

No mikey this is not an octal core chip, you're misinformed or you read the thread at XS wrong or something.

A Clovertown is a QUAD core chip. Clovertown is like two dual core Woodcrests put together. Clovertown is to Woodcrest, the same as Kentsfield is to Conroe. It's simply two dual cores put together, difference being the clover/wood can run dual cpu, the kent/conroe can't. The guy even states in his thread that he has two physical cpu's. He has two server cpu's on a dual cpu mobo. Two physical cpu's for a total of 8 cores .

I think he is referring to what we were talking about in PM's yesterday. Either way, further research has confirmed that octal core currently does require two physical cpu's, as the first octal cpu (8 processor cores on one cpu) in not due out until intel makes the move to 45nm process (currently codenamed Harpertown and Dunnington).

Oh ya, I meant what you guys were talking about before about octal core, sorry should've quoted a different post. You seem to have thought dude at XS had ONE cpu with 8 cores. Sounds like you guys got it straight by pm .

As for your deal wowza, do whatever you think is best. Personally I feel like some of the others that this guy was kinda sly and underhanded on this deal with you. Especially with the rubbing off of the letters on the IHS, that tells me he knew exactly what he was doing to deceive you...and overcharge you. Because trust me, they were there, they're always there. Plus if it turns out to not be ES, he burned you even more.

But, on your side of the coin, you were willing to pay that money (ripoff though it may be) for the quad core kentsfield, and this is the same cpu really. So I can see why you're not all that bent outta shape about it, you got almost what you paid for, just a different codename, which would bother some but you don't seem to care. It even has the added benefit of dual cpu capability, if you wanted to go really crazy and get another clovertown and a server board, making your own octal beastie, you could.

Thread Starter
Well, I just called the guy (long distance overseas is really expensive), and he decided to give me a partial refund, because he forgot to mention that the multi's were locked. I just assumed that they were unlocked, but some ES processors, they are locked. Though he did say it was a Kentsfield becasue,
A. They don't make Clovertowns for LGA775 only Kentsfields (so he actually did sell me a Kentsfield)
B. Since when did Intel ever make Xeons for desktop systems?

It was a Pre-ES processor, so I guess you can call it an ES processor, because it was a sample chip, and has a pre ES stepping (B0), True unlocking ES's are B1, Retail chips will be B2 and Golden's are B3. Since I got the first of the steppings, it's odviously the worst out of the 4. The guy I bought it from never promised an OC, so he can't work with me on that one. Though at least the seller had some generosity to give me a partial refund.

@chozart, what other CPU ID tools?
