Help with choosing an ATI driver

Thread Starter
I'm having instability issues that Windows says is due to my video card driver. I'm not sure which driver to get (my card is an ATI Saphire Radeon x1600Pro 256MB edition). Should I get the newest ATI driver, or should I get a 3rd party driver.

Here's the link to the ATI driver:

https://support.ati.com/ics/support/...e&folderID=293

And the link to the 3rd party download:

http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=ati

Also, should I try the Omega driver? (I know I've heard some people talk about them here.)

http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati/omega_ati_readme.php

Note: I'm going for performance, software (gaming and otherwise) compatibility, and stability.

Well performance wise and compatibility wise it all depends on your system. No one can really reccomend a driver as it depends on your system performance and preference. However as you say there are errors being created this leads me to beleive that there may be some kind of issue between windows and your drivers.

Firstly i would try using the official and most up to date ATI drivers after performing this method below as it should fix your problem:

Installing Graphic card driver efficiently!!! When you Update your graphics cards drivers theres ways that you should go about it. Follow these simple steps below.

1.Download and install ''Driver Cleaner'' Here:
http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.html
2.Uninstall your Current Display drivers such as your ''ATI'' or ''Nvidia'' drivers.
3.Now run ''Driver cleaner'' and depending on the Drivers you have you will have to select either ''ATI'' or ''Nvidia'' from the drop down menu. Only select the main title of the driver in the drop down such as just ''ATI'' or ''Nvidia''
4.Once you have selected Your driver click on the ''Start'' button and this will now start the driver cleaning process. ( Do this twice to be sure )
5.Now reboot your system and Download the latest Nvidia or ATI and go ahead and install them.

Doing this avoids driver corruption and conflicts so you can now enjoy smooth gameplay.

Also do the above in SAFE MODE.

If the official ATI drivers dont work then i would do the above again and try the Omega drivers.

ugh. When I downloaded and started to install the microsoft.net windows framework 2.0 (which it says is a necessary componant to have before installing my ATI driver) it says that my windows installer is not properly registered. I never bothered to register Windows XP, becasue the PC I use it on is not even connected to the internet. (I connect through my dad's PC.)

*Nevermind. It seems that windows installer is disabled in safe mode...when I went back to windows normal mode it worked just fine.

I've tried the omega drivers and I didn't really like them. The moded Ati Tray Tools wasn't too my liking so I went with the Warcat modded drivers. I've had good experiences with them

EDIT: Do you have SP 2?

EDIT2: Did you try to install the framework through Microsoft update or what? If thats not working for you try using http://www.autopatcher.com/ it has all the windows updates put into one installer plus some extras if you want them. It is updated every month so that it doesn't get behind and you don't have to run microsoft update all the time.

I used the new warcats and the new omega's and I find that the omega's gave me 300 additional points in aquamark.
