does tubing size make a big difference in temps?

thinking about swapping from 1/2 x 3/4 to 7/16x5/8.. i use bitspower compression fittings tho. does this make a difference?

tubing size does not make a different in temp (or very little) but you surely don't want to go below 3/8 ID. Thats the minimum. i have tried 1/2 ID 7/16 ID 3/8ID. The reason i left 1/2 is because it look to fat to run cpu and gpu loop, for cpu only is fine. I left 7/16 cause there wasn't many choices in compression fitting and 7/16 in 1/2 barb no clamp look nice but why run the risk. Now i went with 3/8id - 5/8od and it looks great in a full loop. Nice temp too.

I used to use 3/8" tubing, then i switched to 1/2" tubing. I saw no signifigant improovement. I am going back to 3/8" tubing as soon as the shipment arrives, why? the 1/2" tubing is too bulky and stiff in my opinion.

Cathar, one of the early testers and designer of early waterblocks, did comprehensive testing on the effect of tubing size on temperature here.

3/8 ID tubing (9.6mm) vs 1/2 inch ID tubing (12.7mm), there was 0.1C difference in cpu temps. The difference between compression fittings and barbs was about the same 0.1 to 0.2C difference.

Bottom line, you wont be able to measure the difference of 0.1 to 0.2C unless you buy some expensive test measuring equipment, and you certainly wont see it.

3/8 ID 5/8 OD is easiest to work with, looks better to me, kinks less since 1/8 inch thick, and no measurable difference than the fatter 1/2 or 7/16 inch.

ya i wanna toss my 1/2x3/4 but i have compression fitting specifically for that tubing, and would cost a bit too much for me to replace them right now, guess im stuck for the moment
post #6 of 7
yeah at $7-10 per fitting it adds up quick to switch.

Tubing size makes virtual no difference unless your running the system passive, in which case you will keep cool for a little longer... how much so depends on the tubing length used in the entire system.
