Well. I just pulled the trigger.

A6-3650 and Asrock MB from Super Biiz... 170$

1TB 7200 Seagate and LG burner from Newegg. 107$

Gonna hold out on the case for a day or two, same with the ram and windows. Maybe Easter will bring some deals.

That and she realized she needs to get a new monitor, along with the tower, so I'll save her a few bucks this route as well so she can put that for the monitor.

I would say for the requirement, an intel low end system OR the AMD low end APU is SAVE and ENOUGH. The stock fan would not be too noisy.

CASE: ~40$
PSU: 25$
CPU+MB combo:
1. INTEL: intel G840 + ASRock H61M/U3S3 (85$ +70$)
or 2. AMD: AMD A4-3400 + GIGABYTE GA-A55M-DS2 (70$ + 60$)
NOTE: the above MBs has DVI-D.
MEM: say 30$ for 4GB
GPU: integrated
HDD: 1TB at least. round 90$ The price is crazy nowadays. She may want to store a lot of movies and musics and picture with some friends (like you? wink.gif).
DVD burner: 25$

So you spend 365$ for INTEL system and only 340$ for AMD hardware setup. You can play new games with them using low configuration. thumb.gif

This. lol

for a $500 budget, i would like to lean on APU or Intel G8XX series of cpu. since all she needs to do is surf the web or chat, that would be sufficient and its low power system.

These are all slightly over budget, if you want to keep it in budget, get rid of the SSD.

A6, 8GB RAM, SSD
Part list permalink Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
CPU: AMD A6-3650 2.6GHz Quad-Core Processor ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-A55M-DS2 Micro ATX FM1 Motherboard ($49.99 @ NCIX US)
Memory: Wintec One 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($41.99 @ Newegg)
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($89.99 @ Newegg)
Hard Drive: Crucial M4 64GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($84.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Apex SK-393-C ATX Mid Tower Case ($19.99 @ NCIX US)
Optical Drive: LG GH24NS70 OEM DVD/CD Writer ($17.98 @ Newegg)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (64-bit) ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $504.91

Your friend doesnt seem to be doing anything graphically intensive, so an i3 system with no GPU might be better.
i3, 8GB RAM, SSD
Part list permalink Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
CPU: Intel Core i3-2100 3.1GHz Dual-Core Processor ($99.99 @ Microcenter)
Motherboard: ASRock H61M-VS Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($54.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Pareema 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($34.99 @ Newegg)
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($89.99 @ Newegg)
Hard Drive: Crucial M4 64GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($84.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Apex SK-393-C ATX Mid Tower Case ($19.99 @ NCIX US)
Optical Drive: LG GH24NS70 OEM DVD/CD Writer ($17.98 @ Newegg)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (64-bit) ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $502.91

Both builds are roughly the same price, and in terms of performance, the i3 will perform better, but the average user(your friend) will not notice the difference.

I would highly recommend getting her an SSD, for her uses, she will see the most difference with things on the SSD. Make sure you link(shortcut) the My Documents/Pictures/etc... onto the 1TB HDD.
