[GamesIndustry] Developers see costs double for Xbox "Durango" sequels to Xbox 360 titles - Page 4

I just read an article from the IDC that even though HDD manufacturers will be going back to pre-flood inventory, the post flood prices will remain for the most part because they saw that people are willing to pay the ludicrous prices for hard drives. I think game devs are taking steps ahead of time to "justify" the inevitable price increase for games. Whether or not it's legitimate, they're in the business to make money, not games.

It's apparent with many of the releases of newer games, shorter campaigns and more energy put into multiplayer. I remember when Perfect Dark came out and I had to buy a jumper pack or whatever it was called. Well that was all those years back and it wasn't for multiplayer. I don't remember when a game was updated for single player like it is for multi. They're continuing to eek as much money out of games as they can while putting as little effort forth as possible. That's at least how I see it.

Perfect Dark... I miss it... frown.gif

Although the article sounds like bull because all models start life extremely high res I see nothing but good in this article. Dev costs don't really concern me I just want beautiful games. I'm actually even ok with the industry going towards the movie model where there are five ultra publishers that make the big budget stuff but there is still room for indie stuff in between.

Nothing but good?

People don't want to pay 59.99$ for games right now.

Expect game prices to be like 69.99$ for X720, or so.

Lol at the gas comparison.
Difference between NEED and WANT.
I need to get to work, I don't need to play a games, especially when it equals a new tank of gas.

...hmm screw pirates, gas is hurting the gaming industry!

If game prices go a penny over $59.99 I'm finding a new hobby.

Developers with access to the Durango (the code name for Microsoft's next console) are seeing costs rise sharply, primarily due to higher polygon counts and better textures required. "I'm having to double my budget for models," said one developer working on a sequel to an earlier title that appeared on Xbox 360 and PS3. "If we want to take advantage of Durango's capabilities it takes a lot more time for each model." This can also result in either a longer time to develop a title, or the need to put more artists on, or both.
Sounds like bull to me. Making a high poly model doesn't necessarily take longer than making a low poly one. In fact, in most typical game development work-flows, artists begin by crafting a high poly model then perform additional work to reduce the poly-count and clean up the model to get usable game assets and multiple LOD levels. The closer the gap gets between million+ poly models and in game assets, the less work needs to be done and the shorter the work-flow gets. Correct me if I am wrong here?

OH no they cant keep pumping out the same games for more money ... they might have to try and make it look better and play more fluidly ... what a fail!

I agree with op, i don't see how it would be harder to model higher res objects/models , and higher res textures.

Can someone explain, i'm confused here?
