955 Phenom BF3 Performance

Thread Starter
I did a little testing and was wondering if my 955 was going to be a bottle neck for Multiplayer BF3. After doing a little bit of searching I couldn't find a definitive answer as most were referencing the single player and how it has no effect really on what processor you have. So I figured I would go ahead and post my results of experimentation with multiplayer BF3.

First I tried to push my 6950 a bit farther but I'm pretty sure without more voltage I can't get my core stable past ~940ish. I used Heaven and MSI Kombustor for stability and benching purposes. When in game all core of my CPU were ranging around 80-90% usage and my GPU usage was between 90-99% usage. I was in a 64 player Caspian with everything maxed, also note I have an old monitor and run 1440x900 I know it sucks. Minimum FPS was around 30 Maximum upwards of 80, typically it sat around 50. Also note that GPU memory usage was almost 1gb (I have a 1gb card). I also have tested the TV hooked up to HDMI and wouldn't consider the game playable at that resolution minimum dipping into the 20's and averaging probably around 40 peaking at around 60.

As far as the CPU went I under clocked it to 3.0 ghz and then OC'd to 3.6 (my 955 is C2 stepping and doesn't OC well at all). There was no appreciable difference in FPS although it is hard to recreate the exact same scenarios in multiplayer.

Bottom line: perhaps this does reiterate some of the points mentioned in single player, CPU matters very little in the grand scheme of things, if you want max everything on BF3 you're going to need something in the realm of a 680GTX 7970 or 7950 single cards to max it or a dual card setup of "high end" last gen cards @ 1080. Just seeing that my CPU wasn't pegged while my GPU was one would assume that my CPU was not bottle necking and FPS could be higher if I had a another/better card.

Other notes: 1600 Mhz Ram @ 9-9-9-24, Force 3 SSD, Saph. 6950 1 GB @ 940/1425, 955 BE @ 3.6 Stock NB settings.

Thanks for the info. Intel fanboys love to cry "bottleneck," when the discussion arises. Un-biased tests have shown that at high resolutions (which almost everyone is running) CPU's perform on par with one another.

I believe in BF3 the GPU often bottlenecks before CPU.  Even then, BF3 performs strongly on processors with more cores.  It also loves to have more RAM (i.e. 4+ GB).

I can attest to that. I've my 955 clocked at 3.8GHz, and 2.6NB. But I had two of my cores disabled for the IPS(we have very frequent power cuts), and yesterday accidentally started BF3 and it was unplayable. lol I went mad for the next 10mins, as everything was fine with my PC.

Then I discovered CoreTemp showing my CPU as a Callisto rather than a Deneb. tongue.gif Bottom line: BF3 makes use of all the threads available(even upto 8) and loves more cores not necessarily talking about BD. tongue.gif

To the OP: But I believe there is a bottleneck with our 955, where most high end GPUs benefit from say an Intel chip (min FPS) in intense areas(maps). FPS would drop suddenly in certain parts of the maps, even though I have a stable overclock and running at 1920x1080, could be my GPU too IDK. rolleyes.gif

No you're right. The only way you can guarantee 60fps at all times at max in BF3 is with Intel. One example off the top of my head is the US base on Caspian Border. If I'm there and look straight towards the middle of the map I drop to 45fps (Ultra settings, 1080p)

Same here! Got my 970 (C3) clocked at 3.9 and it still givers me drops to +-40 fps.
