[IGN]Sources detail the Playstation 4's Processing specs - Page 7

You can't look at this in relation to PC hardware, technology has been moving so fast developers haven't really stopped to smell the roses in the PC world.

Once the dev kits are out for each platform we will probably be amazed at what the hardware can do in console gaming. Instruction set optimization, etc.

The thing is we pretty much maxed out Crysis like graphics in 2007 with 2 8800GTX's so this type of technology isn't super impressive to us anymore.

The thing is all about gameplay now, use the hardware to make quality games, which have been severely lacking on the PC for the most part in the last few years and which consoles can take to the next level.

Current games are also lightly threaded. Their aim is now going to be developing for the full 4 cores in the A8. I'm sure the 7670 is a little under-powered for almost any four core when all of the cores are used.

Depends on what the cores are used for.

I know they can optimize the crap out hardware but that is really cutting it short.

Things like large scale physics and tessellation are out the window. It saddens me that we've reached the 'good enough' plateau and are just throwing bacos on the salad.

Going off past console launches and common sense a 7670 simply does not make sense as a console GPU. We will be on 22nm by then and even if the console were launching tommorow this chip does not represent the best perf/per watt that AMD has to offer. It's illogical on numerous fronts.

Also I expect power pc because there is less overhead compared to a comprable x86 processor. This is all speculation on my part but I think it's pretty informed speculation all things considered.

I say again expect the consoles in a late 2013 time frame and expect the GPU power to be roughly equivalent to the 7850. Good chance they will launch on 22nm as well. Even if they don't they will shrink soon afterwards making a more powerful box tempting for both Sony and Microsoft.

It simply does not make sense for them to give up their graphics advantage with tablet gaming coming on so strong and considering how easy it would be to let a tablet hook up to a TV with a wireless controller. A 7670 only makes sense if Microsoft and Sony are planning to launch these boxes at a sub 200 price point and considering current gen consoles are barely there I highly doubt this will happen.

I think that there is something to be concerned about here. When the PS3 and 360 were released, their graphics chips were actually the highest end offerings that their respective companies had available, not counting the fact that Nvidia's game changing G80 was still in the oven. The 360's chip was somewhere in between the x1900xtx and the 2900xt architecturally, so it was really more advanced than anything on the market.

This time however, it seems that both companies are opting for chips that are considerably weaker than the fastest available, and though these consoles will put out performance far above what a similarly equipped pc would, they will become terribly dated even faster than this gen. Consoles have to have at least the same graphics hardware as the highest end PC at launch time if they have any hope of staying relevant for more than a couple of years.

That's my 2cents.gif

Once again for emphasis.

The hardware can be the same, but the platforms can still be entirely different because of the APIs used to interface with the hardware.

This might help you understand the differences.

Yes. Folks seem to think that the hardware is identical to PC and its not. They may sometimes use certain off the shelf hardware in these consoles, but they will be highly customized and tailored to interface in ways they wouldn't be used in a PC environment.

Then remove the overhead that the PC has and go bare metal programming and you will run circles around what a PC would do with the same off the shelf components.
