e6300, ds3, thermalright ultra-120 NOT oc'ing please HELP

I recently installed a thermalright ultra-120 again after thermalright gave me another bracket. It is running finely at stock cpu clock, and I am getting 39 on temp1 and 27 on temp2 readings on speedfan. Also, running dual prime for 9 minutes read no errors (I didn't use it for long.)

However, once I raise the fsb just a little it does not boot. I first tried it at 350, then lowered to 320 and just to check I lowered it to 280 (stock is at 266). This is unbelievable! Every single time, it would restart after the fsb change and would not boot.

It would turn on, without getting a moniter signal, and within 5 seconds it would suddenly shut down. Then it would try to turn on again, but within 5 seconds the same thing. This goes on until I unplug the power supply (or after waiting a few more restarts) it would revert back to stock cpu.

I am very new to overclocking, but it is to my understanding that increasing the fsb should do the trick, unless it has something to do with my ram timings.

Also, i have reason to believe it may be caused by my thermalright ultra cooler, because before with the stock cooler I was able to overclock to 2.1, although it would still revert back to the normal clock after a while. But at least I was able to go into windows with the 2.1 showing.

The thermalright requires a backplate bracket that has an adhesive to the back of the motherboard. Does this interfere with the functionality of the cpu or motherboard. I have included a picture of the area where the bracket goes on, as you can see it has some adhesive still on.

Well i cant help you with overclocking it however when your system wont boot or you are having issues CMOS reset is your friend.

To do this do the below:

1. Look to your motherboard and you will notice a small batter ...Take it out
2. Leave it out for 2-5mins to let CMOS clear.
3. After the allowed time put it back in.
4 Reboot. Remember after a CMOS reset all BIOS options are RESET.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I am familiar with this method, but thanks anyways. I am still concerned with the overclock though, since 1.86 is kinda slow for me . Was hoping to get it to 3.0. Anyone with a ds3 have any advice?

Im not expert at overclocking the Conroe CPU series however have you tried upping the V-core 1 increment above stock to see if that helps. Also what PSU do you have as that can have a major effect on overclocking.

You'll want to have a look at your memory muliplier in the BIOS. It's not actually called that though, but it is set to Auto by default and when you check it you get options something like this: 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.33, 4.0 or something like that. Choose 2.0, that means you'll be running your RAM at a ratio of 1:1. At default, my understanding is that the ratio makes your RAM run too fast if you increase the fsb.

Also, you can't rely on Speedfan for your CPU temperatures, use CoreTemp or Itel's TAT (Thermal Analysis Tool) for an accurate reading of both your cores.

For the Ds3 it is normal for it to turn on, turn off after you change the FSB. Then you have to wait for it to turn back on. It's a built in feature I think, to check if the overclock is safe. I was confused the first time I overclocked with my s3.

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/M...me=GA-965P-DS3

Quote:
Q:Is it normal that the system will reboot during its first power on after BIOS memory setting changed ? ( 965P-DQ6, 965P-DS4, 965P-DS3,965P-S3 )

A:For 965P-DQ6、965P-DS4 、965P-DS3、965P-S3 motherboard, if the memory setting is not the chipset spec of 800/ 667/533 MHz in the BIOS setting during system installation, then the system will re-write the initial motherboard parameter when the first boot after BIOS seeting. After the re-write is done, the system will reboot. The shutdown and reboot after the first power on is normal situation.
Try overclocking again, and turn it on, let it shut off, and wait for it to turn back on. If it doesn't try updating the bios version.

I would also advise that you do get the latest BIOS update for that motherboard too.

Thank you all so much for replying. I had f6 bios, the latest one I believe.

Mazeppa you are correct. I changed the fsb to 2.0 before looking here and I am getting it to 2.7 so far, and dual priming at a temp of 37 with speedfan. I do use the intel tat, but I understand that this is for the cores, correct? in which case I am getting 50 and 47 with dual prime.

Thanks again for all your help. And if I am correct, I change the pci freq to 100?

I am so excited I finally got this overclocking thing working. I'm proud of the thermalright ultra 120, after lapping it and then applying AS5, it seems to be doing it's job pretty well.

huh, apparently there is an f7 bios now, seems to make mobo compatibile with quad core. Although I don't need this yet, and don't plan to for years to come, this is awesome news! the ds3 can run kentsfield???
