I bought a book called "Effective Java Second Edition" way to advanced for me.

I learn easier when I watch videos but I can not find any really good indepth videos : /

I watched New Bostons video's but I am still unable to make a program myself. still lost and I really dont want to go to school for programming.

Long time developer with some teaching background...and my advice is learn by doing. You will retain very little of what you see and hear...and it will be far more meaningful when you actually do it.

You can start small. Download and install the latest JDK, get a text editor like Notepad++, and then start coding simple examples.

Learn how to compile and run a simple class...like this:
Quote:

public class Overclock {

public static void main(String[] args) {

System.out.println("Hi xsabrewulf!");
}
}

Then start learning about creating an actually meaningful class with member variables and methods. Like many OO languages, the syntax and libraries are vast...and then you have only scratched the surface...with many more things to learn about OO, frameworks, design patterns, containers, etc...but a journey of a thousand miles all starts with a single step.

Eventually, you'll want to graduate to an IDE like Eclipse or IntelliJ Idea Community, but they can be overwhelming at first, so start simple...and learn the basics of compiling, import statements, classpath, etc.

Basically practise (keep coding) and learn how to read APIs.

If you encounter a problem, hunt around the net for solutions. Its almost a 100% guarantee that someone out there has encountered the same problem as you have currently and a fix has been posted. Do NOT copy/paste blindly, even if it works as you wouldn't have understood why it worked anyway and the basic steps to understanding is always important.
