Happens pretty much every release.

There will always be a segment of any given population that feel their opinions are the one true path and that those who disagree must not understand, or must be lying.

Installed it on another partition, tried it, didn't like Metro, formatted that partition for storage again and forgot about it.

I admit I didn't spend the time to even try and like it, I just seen the Metro crap, messed around with it a little and thought UGH redface.gif I'll give it a proper chance when it's released.

Some people say that Windows 8 sucks because it has no taskbar. SO WRONG. The taskbar is there. The only difference between Windows 7 and Windows 8 in terms of GUI is that the start menu has been replaced by the Metro launcher. That's it.
Others say that Metro is a resource hog. Yea, makes perfect sense that everything in Windows 8 is more responsive, despite Metro being a "resource hog" rolleyes.gif
Don't spread around fud that you hear around here without actually trying it out for yourself.

You said it. "The only difference between Windows 7 and Windows 8 in terms of GUI is that the start menu has been replaced by the Metro launcher. That's it."

So why would I pay copious amounts of cash money for a new GUI? The slight performance gain is simply not enough to justify the cost. I'm not a Win8 hater, but I do think it's pretty silly. Win7 is too good of an OS, and they should have given it more time on the market before releasing the next version. I'm starting to feel like they just want my money. They could have just released a "Windows Tablet" OS, and incorporated the tablet functionality into Win8 in a couple of years. It just seems like everytime they need to make a non-server/desktop specific OS they screw it up with poor marketing/business choices.

Yeah, but I think "a segment of any given population" is a much larger percentage than usual. I honestly believe that Win8 isn't going to get very good reception by most of the PC enthusiasts. It's the tablet PC users and computer-illiterates who will be cheering. I mean, you know that guy you see in best buy talking to one of the sales associates trying to get help purchasing a new computer? Yeah, the guy who actually believes he needs that $1800 notebook for microsoft outlook and web browsing? Yeah, HE'S going to LOVE Win8.

UI needs to be intuitive from the start, when I tried the Win 8 CP, I felt lost. It feels very single task oriented.

Also, being strong armed into major change is another big mistake, if they want to push their new UI that fine, but don't cut out the people who would like to carry on using what they are used to.

They manage to have Aero and older styles that look simple like XP in Windows 7, whats the big deal?

I've tried both the developer and consumer previews; on a system, laptop, and VM, and yes, I still do not like it. Backwards approach Microsoft is going, if you ask me.

Microsoft completely revamped the UI in Vista, confusing a lot of users who've used 95-XP. Windows 7 was basically a (very good) Service Pack for Vista, and now Microsoft is completely revamping the UI again? Main reason I left Windows is because I don't like the direction it's going.

I've never used it, and I was under the incorrect impressions for a long time.

I think out of all of the Windows 8 hullabaloo that has come about recently, the one that was most annoying for me to see was the guy--I don't remember his name right now, but he's been a long-time technology personality and used to be on TechTV--was making a big stink about how Windows 8 is terribad because his father couldn't figure out how to use it cold. And the giant stink storm that ensued because his father couldn't figure out how to use a completely different UI--which I thought was way overdramtic and entirely unnecessary. And I lost respect for that guy ever since.

I understand now that all of the "ZOMG IT IS SO AWFUL" backlash was probably from people who didn't actually use it, and I can see the point for the OP starting this thread, but on the other hand, what MS really needs to do is de-emphasize and down-play the tablet/touch-oriented features when addressing the desktop community, and emphasize the things it can do better than windows 7. You can only blame clueless haters insofar as where the marketing clearly fails.

Seems like I'd prefer this on a tablet device, but given that I only JUST migrated from XP to Win. 7 at home within the past 6 months (been using it at work long before that), I can't see myself making another change unless there is a huge advantage. Not yet been shown what that advantage is.

Well, I've used both and I'll try the RC when it lands, but I don't want it for my desktop at all. It's absolutely great on the HTPC. We've started using the remote control for it again because it works pretty well with Metro and it's actually made stuff easier. I think Kinect will do even better for us there and I can't wait to try that (waiting for a cheap Kinect to show up).

But I think it's unfounded to say "most" people are clueless haters, and this thread belongs in rants and raves.
