2nd monitor flickers when OC'd 5850

Thread Starter
I just got my catleap today and have been using it successfully with my 5850 without any trouble. I then reattached my old monitor to the 2nd DVI port so I can use it as a secondary display. The secondary display started freaking out and flickering non-stop. This even happens when in windows and the card is downclocked to 2D clocks. When I have it set on 775/1125 it does the freaking out flicker, but if i bump it down to 725/1000 everything goes back to normal and it works perfectly. The flickering is intensified when I have video playing. Is this a known issue with a quick fix?

With two monitors the 2D idle clocks should be higher to avoid flickering. You can use Afterburner to set it something like 300/900 for core and memory. That's the easiest way.

When I overclock it though in CCC it turns the 2D clocks to 157/300, but when it's not overclocked its set to 400/1000, which fixes the problem.
I tried overclocking it through afterburner with the exact same results. Is there a way I can modify the 2D clock for the overclocked profile?

I had that problem with my 5870 2 years ago. I thought they would have that fixed by now. I overcame it then by flashing my card with a bios from a OC'd card.

Did you just use something like GPU-Z to extra the bios and just modify it and reflash it? I'm not too sure how the process gues because I've never done it before.

I wouldn't do it if your not comfortable with this sort of thing. Its not done in Windows and is risky and will void your warranty. You can get the info and Bios files searching google wink.gif

You can set the 2D profile in Afterburner 400/600 (will lower the idle temps) and save it as profile 1 and 3D your overclock save as profile 2. Everytime before you save it to profile hit "apply" then "save". Then go to Afterburner settings under "profile" to select your 2D and 3D clocks and voltages. You can save up to 5 profiles in Afterburner but choose only 2 at anytime for 2D and 3D. If iirc you have to disable CCC Overdrive from interfering.

The other alternative is to edit the CCC profile but the above is the easiest [Updated]AMD/ATi 2D Clock Guide - techPowerUp! Forums

The last one is to edit the 2D clock in BIOS then flash it to the chip.
