Just overclocked my 3930k

Hey guys,

Buitl my new system... sorry have not updated sig.

Case - haf x
cpu - 3930k
ram - 16gb ripjaws
cpu cooler - noctua nh-d14
power supply - corsair hx 1050w

So I managed 4.8ghz at 1.415 volts. Ran prime95 for a couple of mins with no errors but temps were up near the 80's in coretemp (too high for my liking) I may have been able to bring the voltage down more as this was the first value I tried but didn't bother because of temps.

Ended up Prime95 20 min run with no errors 4.4ghz @ 1.28v. absolute max temp in coretemp was 72 degrees on the 1st core.. 6th core was bout 64 degrees.

Is this safe for 24/7 use rendering in premiere pro?

Thanks!

Both temps and vcore are very good, but 20 mins of prime is too short to talk about stability.

Thanks guys glad to hear I got a half decent cpu!

After watching the "how to overclock sandy bridge-e" video on youtube by ausrog he says that prime95 is absolute maximum power/heat and in real world conditions you would never reach such temps/power draw. He says even if prime95 fails the system could still be "stable" for what your doing with it.

In saying this if the ambient temp rises 5 degrees or more you may be in trouble!!!

I was a bit surprised that the nh-d14 could not handle the temps at 4.8ghz (room temp about 27 degrees) Maybe I should have gone with the h100 after all. All the research I did on the internet showed that the d-14 was on par with the h100 and under load they were only 1-2 degrees different.

I am now learning that the benefit to having the H100 is the fact that the VRM is more exposed which means it should be cooler. This apparently has a massive impact on overclockability.

Have to think the air being moved from the D-14 will hit the VRMs a bit anyways. So that might help you anyways with your OC.
