Ah, no chance yet, son spilt beef briskett on top of his CM690, so I had to go to Brisvegas on a rescue mission. Turned out he killed his $899 MSI GTX 590 - expensive meal...might be a few more days b4 I get the chance to play with it properly...looks like a well built unit..

Now, being a total noob at this, a little nervous.

I've got a bag of dielectric grease ampoules (came with the unit and the guides I'm reading tell me I don't really need it), plenty of eraser, one sided 50mm Aerocool rubber insulation tape, two sided 50mm Aerocool rubber insulation tape, and two sheets of closed cell neoprene black insulation sheet 200mm x 340mm .

For the back of the mobo: Would three strips side by side (200 x 50 x 3mm each) be sufficient or do I want one of the neoprene sheets? (there's no metal plates built in on the back of UD3P)

The socket latch doesnt come off on my guinea pig EP45-UD3P Rev 1.6 so do I just cram eraser inside the latch up to the cpu (eliminating air spaces) and close it, then add eraser outside between cpu and capacitors/heatsinks?

I'm guessing I'll want some fans pointing at it around the cpu to keep condensation down too?

I've got E8400, E8500, and E8600 of my own to play with to start, before trying Commando and a pile of early 775 chips.

Sounds pretty good ACS but unless you are going to run it 24/7 or for more then say 8 hours I might skip on the Dialectric greese unless it makes you feel comfortable.
I have never used anything in the socket area even with LN2 going for close to 8 hours and never had a problem but it does depend on your enviornment.

After a few short runs you will see how much Ice build up you are getting and you will be able to insulate according to how much water you might have.

Your going to have some fun bro thumb.gif

You don't need the dielectric grease if you can seal the socket airtight. If you can accomplish what Viss did here then you'll be just fine. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?201916-Insulating-with-eraser&highlight=art%20eraser Looks like he used some neoprene to fill the tiny air gaps under the socket load plate.. then sealed right over it with the eraser. The height of the eraser should be slightly below the surface of the cpu die.. maybe by 1-2 mm or so. The evap should stick out from the clamshell by a few mm. The gap between the eraser and clamshell will be taken up by a neoprene sheet. The thickness of the neoprene should be just a tad bit more than the gap.. maybe by 2mm. That will allow the clamshell to press into it providing an airtight seal.

For the back of the mobo.. I'd go 4 x strips of 50mm x 3mm the full width of the mobo starting at the top edge. Then install metal backplate and put 1-2 layers to fully cover that. Kind of overlap the bottom strips so no air gaps at the seams. Make sure to put thin nuts or spacers on each mounting stud/screw between the backplate and mobo.. just slightly less than the 3mm insulation tape you're using.

Yes.. put 2-3 fans blowing on the evap enclosure and socket area. They don't need to be anything powerful. I use 3) 80mm 30cfm 20dba.

Wow.. she hasn't aged a bit!!! thumb.gif

Thank you Drewmeister

Pretty much what I've done, except I'v got eraser packed in around capacitors and, um, those black cube thingies...should i remove that? Have not run it yet...

Head is not perfectly flat - slightly convex - does it matter?

Otherwise, pretty well ready for lift-off....

Sounds like you are more than ready. I have the minimalist approach when I use the SS and haven't killed anything yet. Usually the iron kills stuff before the benching happens.

Here is a pic of my M4G. The only thing missing is the shop towel that I i put over the eraser.

The cube things are inductors.. those and the capacitors will be fine covered up.

Of course an untrue evap surface will matter, hopefully it's not too bad. You'll notice more at high oc and load. You'll have to see how your cpu stacks up to others on phase.. compare with others at the hwbot.

You might want to check the contact first... put a small bb size dot in the center on the cpu and observe the squeeze out pattern.

After a new mount I boot pc into bios with phase off.. of course cpu at sock settings. I monitor cpu temps.. my 965be for example, takes a couple minutes to hit 60c.. then I know it's a good mount. I would think your dual core cpu's will take at least two minutes.. maybe even closer to 4min to hit 60c.
