What is wrong with those instructors? Have they not heard of the Internet and networking?

They should be reigned in.... issuing HDDs is a waste of money. The data would be safer in a cloud and would cost less.

We have one that is pretty stuck in his ways. I spent one day in his class that is suppose to prepare you for the A+ exam and he did not like having to get drivers via a download. This guy thought a current driver on some kind of storage should always be supplied by the device manufacture,he simply hated getting anything via internet download. This guy taught when the 80286 was the top dog for home use and he still used handouts from the same era.He told us "well the theory is still the same".Yes I must agree ,some things are still the same. They would not budge from the docking station for the hdd and the mechanical switch.I suggested we do it electronicaly with two power transistors and some LED's that would be easier and cheaper but the old guy "wanted the relability of the mechanical switch" My method that used electronic components was cheaper by 3.00 a unit and they were using a pretty cheesy switch.

My school has 8 monitors hooked up to one computer with Windows Server on it and a C2Q 2.4 GHz with 32GBs of RAM in each. The mouse lags across the screen but its enough to get work done. I hate our school tech advisers so much. mad.gif

Your lucky, the PC's at my high school are terrible. I'm hoping for some better ones when I get into college in a year.

Most of them are these:
300
Those all have single core P4's and 1.5GB's of RAM

Then we have these for my Graphics/Digital Editing Class:
300
This is better than the others, but doesn't cut it for heavy Adobe CS4 and Sony Vegas usage.

Our school uses last gen i7's.

I would venture to guess they are i7 920.

My school upgraded this year, and I must say, it's pretty badassery.

i5 2400's, 6GB of RAM, and a 160GB (not much needed for networked computers) HD.

Those things FLY for a school computer.

I wonder just what it is that makes it so we see this wide range of computer hardware used. Perhaps it is all just how the budget ended up for that paticular school. We do have one man (the guy that is pushing for the 8 cores) that has really put an effort in making the classes work with the equipment that we have. The subjects that get a bit hard to demonstrate (I say hard but not impossible) are the security classes .When you really want to show how to use nmap, backtrack, nessus. You actually need a network to probe and you do not want to crash the network you are probing. This one man has constructed the security classes so as we get the best experience (but it still could be better) with the limited hardware we have.My school is the 8th largest Community College in the nation but we to must look hard for hardware dollars.

I am a believer in letting students use technology in class.I believe it stimulates learning and does not make lazy students. There are people both in the general public and in decision making positions that do not want a high level of technology use in the classroom.Fortunately the statistics show better student performance when technology is incorporated in the classroom, but tech in the classroom still has its detractors.

One situation my school is working hard to change is how very different classes implement the sharing of hardware. We will nave a basic OS instruction class running the first part of the day then an advanced Linux Networking class running latter in the day and we are all sharing the same hardware. This hardware sharing aspect is the situation that the school leaders are trying to make better.Perhaps the having to share hardware did play a part in the decision to use the 8 core AMD cpu, something like "we can't know every demand that will be placed on our hardware but at least the cpu part is flexible enough to adapt to requests we have not yet been made aware of". I can envision the negotiation process, "things were working on the dual core machines but now you tell us you need 8 core cpu's? please explain what has changed".
