The pipes do appear to be flush with the base, he's just trying to get a good application of TIM without having the gaps between the pipes and the base interfere with the spread.

Sorry I missed the part where he said he misspoke. But unless the heatpipes take the weight of the heatsink, some of the pressure is wasted, and TIM may or may not make up for it.

 

Ranguvar -- do as your dentist does: put some water-based ink on the surface of your heatsink, and press it down on a piece of paper (backed by something hard, not more paper). That way you will know if your heatsink was built properly.

 

And maybe you can post a pic of the imprint.

OP:

I just put the small lines of TIM on the Heatpipes only. I used to fill in the gaps but I found no difference because that section of the cooler doesn't do anything. By applying the lines only on the heatpipes the pressure from mounting will naturally fill those voids, allowing the excess TIM to be removed from the copper contact area.

I use a very small amount to make the lines. I think I save myself some TIM doing it this way too, always a plus.

Just like that. Maybe even less TIM then pictured.
If I am feeling extra special that day I might spread a super tiny amount on the CPU itself to make a very very small film covering. I use ICDiamond as my TIM though so it acts a little differently than MX3/4 or AC 5.
