Powermac G4 MDD mod - Natural whitey

Hi, this is my first post here and my first mod.
Firstly i have seen alot of power Mac g4 being mod. But not the MDD.
Why? Probably they had the weirdest PCI slot placement. Hence alot of work will need to be done.

But i think the Mirror Drive door look very nice!

Here i will share how i made it possible to put in a Matx motherboard while retaining the whole outlook.

Before i start this projects i have been looking around for G4, i find that G4 have a very beautiful look. Hence i decided to mod it.

So i do want to keep the original look of the Powermac g4 MDD, whether it is the handle or the side panel, i do not want holes on the side of it.

Unfortunately in this modding, i did not took too much of my picture while doing it. But there are still a few of them but at low quality. so please bear with it.

So first thing is to plan out the spaces due to the small places within the G4.

Here is the layout.

layoutqd.jpg

As you can see the PSU is out is due to i did not want the PSU to cover up the onboard pinout, if not it will cause a bend.

First thing first! Remove the handle and the rest of the plastic cover.

img0671e.jpg
But the back of the plastic is kinda difficult to remove but i am not going to cut it so it is okay

and here are the plastic parts thumb.gif

now the bare case is going to be cut by a mighty hacksaw.

as you see from the layout on the first post.

the holes need to be cut :

2X 120mm fan hole
Psu hole
and a 92mm hole at the bottom

and here is the result:

this image show is not file yet but a rough cut of all the holes.

Spraying time!

before spraying all parts cleaned properly to prevent oil or dirts to be sprayed on, if not this will cause problem as they tend to make winkles or easily tear off from the surface.

img0686c.jpg
the handle

img0685ln.jpg
this is the apple logo which can be separated from the side panel.

img0684l.jpg
the top panel!

img0687psx.jpg

img0701jd.jpg

before spraying was cleaned with turpentine, so it can remove the dirts and oil.

then head on to a thin coat of primer to prevent rust and the color coat will then be able to stick on easily.

some PCI bracket.

And after a few hours, it is done!!!

img0698xo.jpg
here are all the plastic panels and handle.

img0702s.jpg
Here is the bare metal case sprayed.

img0709x.jpg
and all screwed in.

Here as you can see the G4 MDD back is weirdly position.
so no choice i have to cut them and put in a motherboard tray from my old cpu case.

And the when closing a 80mm case will hit the case so there explained why i cut away one side of the fan and the back, which is then rounded so it wont have sharp edges.

and tadah! it works. closing the panel is fine now!

And i try to put in the PSU for testing.

img0707tx.jpg

img0708su.jpg

oh yeah there are tapping being threaded onto the metal case itself.
and the plastic are meant to be a support.

i put in my parts for testing...

img0718jz.jpg

closed it and this is how it look like
Testing for the on off switch.

img0720qv.jpg

its blue! and works!

img0721q.jpg

sprayed my old 19" 4:3 monitor to go along with it.

img0723u.jpg

tadah all working!

of course this is not the final yet. there are more things need to mod.

sry for the bad quality images as it was all taken by my phone. i will try to post up a high quality one soon!

G4 MDD is my favorite Mac case ever made. I had a G4 sawtooth(dual 450mhz) for the longest time, was going to made it into a pc mod as well but ended up giving it to a friend because he needed to run some mac only software.

Also you should take a pic of the back, Kinda wondering how you setup the IO ports.
