Question with 990fx sabertooth - Page 2

i had a problem with an my old computer where the ide cd drive must have died because it wouldnt load any os except xp, it would tell me there was a driver error for drive, which led me to use a usb dvd drive i had with an ide to usb 2.0 converter and worked fine with that setup. it took me a while to come to this conclusion as it will with some new builds, its hard to know if its the drive or the disc or your hdd, you could try downloading the iso of win 7 from windows and then burning at 1x speed or the flashdrive method. someone on MS forums had similar problems with this being the answer

- checking hdd for errors
1. Put the Windows Vista or Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
2. Press a key when you are prompted.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
7. Type CHKDSK /r /f followed by Enter.
Allow this to run and see if it finds errors to repair on your hard disk.

I'm trying to do that and I'm getting
"The type of file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.
Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected."

Any other suggestions?

It's likely that your drive controller set in your BIOS settings is failing to run. You might be using a Raid driver that will not support 7, and will have to try it another way.

so i guess try that too

here is same problem different solution

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproinstall/thread/f45d6116-381f-4ec7-882b-ded9029ffb0c/

other possibility- several of my windows burned discs didnt work and i had to resort to using a pirated version that included the service packs, then entered product key after it installed, i guess i might of had a bad iso to start with

What exactly is the error you are getting?
Also as has been stated, the red l.e.d's only light up momentarily as each component is checked. if there is any l.e.d that stays lit then there is a problem with that component.

I got the red light off it Post now no problems. Is there a command I can run where I can just format the drive and start over ? Or a command to scan drives for bad sectors? The error now is disable caching and shadowing in memory or something like that.

Now it's gotten all the way through install and gets to starting setup services.
Then get an error that says computer restarted unexpected or unexpected error. Click ok to restart. Then does same thing over and over.

Reset your bios and make sure it is running default settings. then go in and make sure ram timings are set to what they should be. make sure there is no oc. my sabertooth oc'ed my cpu on its own out of the box.

my post #11 stated how to check for hdd errors, bootmgr missing could be a bad disc or your drive wont always read it correctly, i used this mobo for several weeks while building it for a friend and it both OC'ed his ram and cpu out of box, had to adjust those in bios for a stable boot. Anyway of trying the drive in a different computer and try to install windows onto a small partition on that working pc. also when you format your drive to install windows, make sure to delete any partition so that it is all unallocated space, then make a new partition and it should create the main plus a small system partition, one of my hdd didnt make that second system partition and prevented my windows install from completing, just another thought
