Which RAM to choose?

Thread Starter
I'm building a new system and need help choosing which RAM to put in it. I'm always trying to find the best "bang for the buck." I'm trying to choose between

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231065

and

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231086

I'm mainly interested in FPS and gaming performance. Will the second ram give me a noticeable improvement in performance over the first? Is the performance increase worth $200, or is the performance increase not noticeable enough?

You won't see ANY difference in performance other than the part where the $500 kit does run 4-4-4-5 w/ 2.3v0 @ 1000mhz but if you buy the $300 kit, you'll be able to run 4-4-4-8 w/2.30v @ 1000mhz.

Save the extra $200 and get the DDR2 800 kit, there won't be a single more FPS gain. Put that extra money towards something else that could really make a difference.

I'm gonna try and hi-jack your thread kurtdh, cauze I've got a similar problem but I didn't wanna start an entirely new thread on this. (looks like you've got the answer you were looking for anyway)
So, I'm looking for 2GB's of DDR500 to try to get a 1:1 parity after OC. Although there's a polethera of choices in the good ol' US, unfortunately I couldn't find anything reasonable here in Canada (price wise), but I've narrowed it down to these choices:

1. Super Talent 2GB DDR500 Dual Channel (CAS 3) $230.00

http://www.memory4less.com/m4l_itemd...pecs#techspecs

2. MUSHKIN eXtreme Performance XP4000 Redline Dual Channel (3-3-2-8) $289.00

http://www.axiontech.com/prdt.php?item=75252

3. Try my luck on fickle eBay!

Apparently my MoBo is quite compatible with most DDR, I don't wanna go under DDR500 cauze I know my NorthBridge can handle it with my Thermaltake cooler, besides if I run it under it's 500 Mhz rating, I can tighten it's timings. I don't wanna go over $300 but I also wanna get the tightest timing I can get! Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Are those U.S. or Canadian prices?

For DDR, I only liked OCZ, I have a kit that does 2.5-3-3-5 @ 500mhz: http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=88696

I did some search on this article: http://www.anandtech.com/memory/show...px?i=2145&p=12 and that's how I end up with them and they're fast, bought them early last year.

Now, out of those two choices, I'd say the Mushkin.

Those prices are in U.S.D. In Canada, 2Gb DDR500 OCZ Gold goes for over 300 US!

I know, me too. I was real close to getting some OCZ Gold from eBay a few days ago, but the price was a little too high for used RAM plus the timing weren't all that! I also like any DDR that uses Samsung TCCD Memory - nice tight timings and great OC-ability! http://www.techpowerup.com/memdb/

***********EDIT***********

Here's a couple more...

Team Xtreem Cronus 2Gb DDR500 Dual Channel (3-3-3-8) $219.45

and

Team Reseach 2Gb DDR500 Dual Channel (3-3-2-8) $231.65

and, well...

OCZ Platinum 2GB DDR500 (2.5-3-2-8) $207.99! Shipping in the U.S. ONLY!:swearing:

Why don't you just losen the timings on your RAM and see if you can get 'em upto DDR 500 speeds? I mean, that's what overclocking is for and my RAM is rated for 800mhz but I have 'em at 1000mhz.

As you can see, my OCZs can do 2.5-3-3-5 @ 2.7v 500mhz, if you're willing to buy 'em I sure can sell 'em to you for less than what those modules are going for. And BTW, they're not TCCDs but TCC5s which when I contacted the OCZ rep, he told me that the TCC5s were just as good and so far I did all the settings according to Anand's site and I ended up with the same results...........and Anand is using TCCDs, so TCC5s are just as good.

Yep, tried it, my value RAM goes as far as 896 Mhz, far from 1:1 parity with the capability of my MoBo's FSB. Since I use my rig primarily for gaming, I discovered that a higher FSB with 1:1 RAM parity will give me better results than a high CPU clock with 5:4 parity.

Darn! I wish I checked back sooner, cause I already went for the Team Xtreem Cronus 2Gb DDR500 Dual Channel for $219.45 USD. I read a little about these little beauties and apparently they're relatively new in the marketing part of the game, but they've been making this stuff for companies like Crucial and others for some time. Ironically they use a similar memory type as the Kingston RAM that I'm using now - Micron 5B - From reviews I read, I think I can get 'em to go 2.5-3-3-8 @ 2.8v 500Mhz (my Kingston can do that @ 400Mhz), which is fine for 1Gb sticks in Dual Channel mode! Thanks for the offer though
