Least likely to bottleneck future components?

So I'm planning out a build, and need to decide: 3930k or 3770k. Will the higher clocks outweigh the extra cores? Assuming Ivy will even get me as high as I think it will. I want to be able to throw in new parts for about 4-5 years, which in tech speak, is a VERY long time. Which of these will be the better performer in the long run? I will be doing mostly web browsing/music/gaming/video editing. Budget doesn't matter. (Obviously not going to waste money though, i.e. 3960x)

dam good question, i would be going for the 3930k as it will give u more pci lanes, which may be uetalizesed in future, plus the money aspect makes it an easier decision, cant back it with much more than that, but the x79 chipset is more fully-fledged feature wise, thumb.gif

The 1156 socket, which ivy bridge is for, will not support the next iteration of CPUs to come from intel (haswell sometime 2014). Its a "dead socket".

My personal opinion, LGA 2011 will likely not support the next performance architecture either. You can't be sure 2011 will support the performance Haswell CPU. It might though. So keep that in mind.

The faster processor with more cores is more likely to perform well in the future. However, for the price of a 2011 board and a 3930k you can buy a mainstream Ivy bridge CPU and motherboard now, and a mainstream haswell and motherboard in two years, and still have money left over. I would buy ivy bridge. It is what I plan to do.

Not to be an ass but it's actually socket 1155, and SB-E will support IB-E, but not Haswell. I think I'll go Ivy and upgrade when Haswell comes out.

as you have a nice i7-2600k @4.62GHz i would keep that, it wont bottleneck future components for awhile yet.. then next year upgrade to the new lga1150 and Haswell.. is just my opinion on what i would do and probably will do smile.gif

With quad channel RAM, 64GB capability and support for IB-E, I'm really not worried about any "bottlenecks" for the next few years.

Problem is that it's unstable as hell and I have so much more overclocking potential but am being limited by the processor, plus this build was more or less to get me into the basics of building high budget water cooled rigs.

this ^^^ i would look at a sandy bridge-e build if you have the budget.. it will with extra PCIe lanes and what 2thAche said will last you a good while and if you like high end then get an IB-E next year.... i would consider this more of an upgrade than switching from a sandy bridge to an ivy bridge, but if you decide to go Ivy based on the slight increase in performance an x63 multi you should expect a nice higher stable overclock especially under water then maybe skip haswell and wait for skylake.. gee decisions and all sound good that even i am starting to doubt my plan hmmmmmm redface.gif

I've got time to decide, I just need to plan this budget out right. I need to buy two GTX 680's for my triple monitor setup, so I'll buy them now and sell right before the GK110 arrives and buy two of those with waterblocks. If I go SB-E I won't have any money left over for the GK110's, but I can raise the sufficient funds I guess.
