But, if he bought prebuilt, he's probably got a micro ATX case... which would mean he would need a new case, as well, if he wants a good overclocking motherboard.

If thats the case (no pun intended), he would be better of saving up and getting something worth while that will last him a year or two

Well actually I'm looking to upgrade mobo and cpu, the old 478 is becomming extinct so I'm looking to purchase some new equip and build my own.
I've also been looking at new towers somthing kinda of cool. I like the size of the tower I have now withy plenty of bays for upgrading and addind new tows but most of the cool looking towers I'm seeing is all mid sized.

I do have some money I'm willing to put out maybe not all in a lump some but maybe about 500 to get some things that I need. I plan on running the pc I have now untill I get my new case, psu, mobo, and cpu. and then I'll add the existing hardware I have in this one as long as my ram is compatible with new mobo.

I have a socket 478 in mine as well, but its a 3GHz cpu, and its overclocked. Like what was said, you could always get a new motherboard, and go from there. eBay has heaps of stuff for socket 478
