[TH] - Intel Conducts Study to See If You Want Touchscreen Laptops

A recent study conducted by Intel is now proving that a majority of people do want touch capability on the laptop. Lately news of the touchscreen tablets has been overflowing the news and for Intel this is not good. Since the release of the Ultrabook, Intel has been pushing its partners to make these thin notebooks.

Source.

I'm speechless. This can only have one explanation: Intel is going to try to make the best out of Windows 8, since it appears that colossal mistake called Metro is going forward anyway for desktops and laptops, and Intel needs their partners to sell computers. In any other circumstance I can't imagine Intel taking their test subjects' answers literally. People want touch because it's fashionable, it looks cool and appears to be intuitive. More features, more features. People always want more features. Will they use it on a regular basis ? Of course not.

I seriously have to question the validity of the study itself, I very much doubt they conducted it for a meaningful period of time. The screen tilts back and forward when you touch it, smudges are left in it, your hand being in the air without support will make the user go back to the keyboard and / or touchpad / mouse after a while because while fun, it's tiring do to that. And then it's just not practical. Imagine you're reading a forum like this. Having your finger on the keyboard or touchpad or mouse and scrolling downwards or upwards is a lot more ergonomic and fast because your hands are resting, they have support and you don't need to raise your hand every single time you want to scroll down. That action she does scrolling down Twitter is completely unrealistc, people only do that on smartphones because the screen can be in an almost horizontal or even horizontal position and they have the other hand holding it.

The touch screen feature is a nice touch..

but the resolution and screen size needs to be big. a 12-14" screen wont cut it.
even the 1080p 15.6 might be a little small for most.

then again its all about cost...thats the main reason why laptop companys are still ruining new laptops with their 720p screens and 900p ultrabooks...

My biggest complaint about touch screeens on normal laptops is a combination of them being unnecessary to efficiently use the device, and their use getting the screen dirty.

Same. Touchscreens on a laptop just seems inefficient to me, given the size of their monitors.

I've never been a fan of a touchscreen anyway, not even on mobiles. In fact every smartphone i've purchased must have a physical keyboard of some kind (Currently own the Xperia Pro)

I prefer the tactile feedback of a real button, not just a flat screen. This also makes multitasking easier. This touchscreen rubbish is just as overrated as the Wii and it's gimmicky controllers.

Microsoft: Hey you.. you want a touch screen laptop right?
Me: no not really.
Microsoft: you WANT a touch screen laptop... RIGHT!...?
Me: Can I buy anything else?
Microsoft: hold on one second... (makes it a requirement to load windows 8 on mobile devices including laptops) for new sale.
Microsoft: Now you cant. Zing. Have fun wiping fingerprints off your laptop screen all the time MUHAHAHAHAH HA HA...
Me: Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Me: you give it auto cleaning glass.. or at least gorilla glass? both maybe? (yes auto cleaning glass is a real thing)
Microsoft: Don't make me laugh.

Pixel density is bad for touch screens...I wish companies would realize this. What happens when your finger is touching 1000 pixels at a time, and you have 3 icons in that space?

Also, dumb idea. Tablets are touch screen laptops.

I wouldn't mind one, but realistically the only way I'd use the touch screen is if I could flip the screen back and oh wait that's a tablet.

Definitely would be interested if you have a full screen flip, or detachable for on the go.
Doesn't seem too elegant to ram touch into a form factor where it doesn't belong! A little research can't harm, can it...?

I have an x220t from Lenovo and I find myself trying to use the touchscreen feature on other laptops I pickup because I do think it's useful.

I don't use it all the time (the keyboard and trackpad are both still completely necessary) but for work I use it to write notes (with the stylus) and I do enjoy scrolling through documents / websites with the touchscreen, as well as making drawings with it in one note.

Maybe it's not for everyone, but I wouldn't go back.

I have never really liked touchscreen devices and I don't care much for iOS devices. However, for my third year of university I ended up purchasing an HP 2760p EliteBook convertible laptop/tablet. The laptop purchase was largely influenced by medical complications and it was necessary to have a device which could easily be used to draw various kinds of diagrams. The only way I would be able to adequately draw things was to have a stylus pen input, and so I started looking for this type of computer. It was also necessary to run Windows so that I could run certain programs, and so I narrowed it down to the HP 2760p, Fujitsu t730, and Lenovo x201. I eventually settled on the HP 2760p, cost was a big influence. I was interested in a detachable, but couldn't find any to my liking which ran windows and purchased a convertible.

The main reason I purchased the 2760p was for the stylus pen input, while the multi-touch capabilities were not something I thought I would really use. I use the stylus constantly and its very useful, but I have not found an especially large variety of tasks where touch is useful in a Windows 7 environment. However, I do like having touch for scrolling and other functions like panning and zooming when reading documents and websites. I also like having the ability to convert it into a tablet at certain times when reading or when space is limited, such as on the bus. I dual boot Win 7 and Win 8 consumer preview and actually really like all the added touch capabilities in Windows 8 (such as an on-screen keyboard that functions properly). I find Windows 8 is poorly navigated if using only a mouse though, and agree the Metro UI is a joke. A convertible laptop with touch capabilities has seemed to be more convenient and portable than a regular laptop would be.

Screen size is definitely an issue with this type of device. My 2760p has a 12.1" screen. For a tablet I would prefer it was smaller, and for a laptop I would prefer it was much bigger. Anyway, overall I like the touch capabilities of this computer and I'm looking forward to finally having better touch support on Windows PCs with the release of Windows 8. If somehow given the option, I would not remove the touch capabilities of this laptop in order to have originally had a lower purchase price. I find touch useful enough that I am willing to pay the extra cost associated with it.
