Now i hope i can get this typed on my moms iPad before going absolutely crazy over the fact that the spell check thinks it's smarter than me, not to mention the touch keyboard ( no pc availible )

This is one of the few times i have used a touchscreen to type a longer bit of text, and just after writing that first bit i like crying. Now i have a point to to make, so lets hope i can get it across.

Sure there is an argument to be made that the ui has a big influence on whether or not a touch screen is effective. And i agree. But, there is, currently, no real substitute for a keyboard when it comes to text input. This means that as soon as the device needs even a medium amount of text input a keyboard needs to be an option. Now there are some workarounds to this, like hauling around a sepperate keyboard, but that defeats the purpose.

Now the more complete solution, as some have mentioned, are the swivel screen laptops. And those are not half bad. Great for drawing or note taking, and at the same time for writing or other tasks.

But when it comes to a standard laptop, with a touch screen... Get outta here. That is nothing but hype milking, oh it is touch so it's fancy and great... Not nescesarrily.

Anyway, cant be arsed to type the rest on this know-it-All-pad. Nothing is complete without a bit of Apple rant. So why do you have to actively pick your own words on this thing by clicking that tiny x, instead of picking corrections you want.

Why is Metro a colossal mistake again? Think about it. Metro will make touch screens viable, and you can still use mouse and keyboard for applications that benefit from them. It's a win-win. On the go (as in when you don't have a mouse handy or a surface for it), a touch screen is usually tons more convenient than a touch pad.

Those notebooks that fold back to become tablets are pretty neat IMO. tongue.gif

I'm sort of confused by the negative reactions here. If you'll never ever ever use a touchscreen on your tablet, why do you want to rain on everyday users who will? Clearly this study demonstrates that there are people who would use it, and actually preferred it for some uses.

Actually I think touchscreens on a laptop is a neat idea. You are sitting close to the screen anyway. The thing is, the option itself will not be used very much, if at all. Perhaps for browsing.

The real problems with laptops are costs, portability, battery, power, and interface (keyboard/mouse). Touch screens are already obsolete because they are actually worse than mouse and keyboard since not only do they not have tactile response and are unresponsive but you block your screen when you interact. Its like if you were building with legos and you had to close your eyes everytime you wanted to use your hands.

I dont know about you but having a laptop is a huge hassle because its like having a baby, and I'm a man I don't need a baby requiring my constant attention. You have to always have your eye on it because since it is an expensive small device its a prime target for theft. I've seen people get up at starbucks to use the bathroom and assume their laptop wont get stolen, only that someone outside was watching them seeing if they leave their laptop alone when they use the bathroom (and letting them do so for a false sense of security), then after getting their schedule down and keeping an eye on other targets they wait for the person to go to the bathroom, then run in grab the laptop, and is gone before the person unzips their pants. Now lets assume that you watch it constantly, I have things that are valuable constantly giving my physical feedback so I will know instantly if anything is grabbed. But then you also ahve to worry about water, about dropping it, tripping, heat, etc. Its a huge hassle to deal with. A laptop is stressful and creates a ton of anxiety that is not needed. Even with warrantys with furthur add to the cost it is a HUGE hassle to RMA and MORE stress.

The other problem is you are caring around this giant screen which should just be glasses with an earpiece, and the interface should be either an "air keyboard" or a sort of partial glove. Making a touch screen is stupid. It misses the entire point that a large heavy screen is NOT needed. And it also misses the point a physical mouse/kb arent needed either. This solves space, weight, battery, and interface problems. First company to do this is gonna make bank. Instead they are wasting time with gestures and touch screens...

The only company I could see making a touchscreen laptop that would not feel like a cheap gimmick would be apple, and they (jobs) have clearly stated that it is just to un egornomic and tiring to reach out across a desk and tap on a vertical screen over and over.

i bought a keyboard dock (no mouse) for my samsung galaxy 10.1 and reaching all the way to the sceen to click was really anooying. now the only time i use the keyboard is for office, for everything else i want a mouse/laptop touch pad

Also, dumb idea. Tablets are touch screen laptops.

Resolution independence:

It's implemented on Android and iOS. Surely it would be on W8 as well.
