Streaming directly from PC through network

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

So I was just changing source on my TV and I noticed that my computer appeared in the list. I tried selecting it but it says that it failed to access the device. Until now I've just been plugging my external HDD into the receiver to watch movies on the big screen, but it would be pretty cool if I could stream right from the PCs internal HDD.

Does anybody know how I can do this? It is a Samsung UA46D6600 and I'm running windows 7 on the pc, its my sig rig if any of that matters.

Thanks for any help!

I would guess that your issue is most likely been caused by some sharing limitaions you will have set on your PC.

With your TV connected and turned on I would first go into windows media player and select the stream heading near the top. From the list select more streaming options. If your TV is then visible in the list that appears make sure it is set to allowed.

From there you can select your homegroup and sharing options near the bottom. Make sure the sharing options that look relevant are selected.

I would then finally go to the folder that you want to share and select properties. Then slecet the sharing tab. Click the share button and make it so the folder is shared to everyone.

Try these steps first then we can look at other things from there.

Okay thanks for that, my parents are just watching TV atm but once they're finished I'll test it out!

When I tried to share the 'My Videos' folder I was only given these options:
- Nobody
- Homegroup (Read)
- Homegroup (Read/Write)

I selected the second option but can TVs even be in a Homegroup? I thought that was a Windows 7 only feature?

I think you misunderstood what I meant. I'm not trying to connect my PC to the TV directly with a HDMI cable, I'm trying to do it through the network

Awesome!! Worked perfectly (almost)! +rep

Is there any way to stop my PC going to sleep when something is being streamed? I don't want to set my PC to never go to sleep, I'd just like to prevent it happening when something is being streamed

If you go into Control Panel -> Power Options -> Change Plan Settings -> Change Advanced Power Settings second up from the bottom should be Multimedia Settings -> When Sharing Media and make sure it is set to prevent idling to sleep.

If you don't see Power Options make sure you are viewing Control Panel as Large Icons.

Ah yeah I had a look there and found it thanks

One more problem though, I tried watching a movie and it was fine for 10 minutes or so but then it just started lagging heeeeaaaaappppps frown.gif I tried a different movie and it still lagged heaps. Is there anything I can do about this or is it just my network not being fast enough? I was sure the wifi would be able to handle streaming it. The pc is wired directly to the router btw

I have always had lagging issues with wireless. Especially with wireless through a concrete wall or floor. I went full wired and it runs like a dream now.

Does your tv play everything? Even mkv and such?

I am using a dlink Boxee box now and it is all I have ever wanted from a mediaplayer.

If possible I would try to use wired. i had problems streaming over wifi, then I setup my rig with wire and all the devices are perfect now. I only had problems when both the PC and the device connecting to it were both wifi, but when only one is wifi I am good.

do you have wireless N?

I have two wireless routers (both on the same modem though) and one is wireless N and the other is G I think, will have to go and make sure the TV is on the N one tomorrow and try again

And no it only plays mp4 frown.gif mkv's don't even show up on the list. Is there any way to get them to? Or do they need to be somehow converted?

On a side note, how do you scroll well on the TVs web browser? The way I've been doing it is just pushing the down button on the remote so it scrolls through the clickable links and eventually brings the view down but there must be a better way
