Streaming directly from PC through network - Page 2

most tv will say pc but on average the pc they refer to is the old legacy connection !vga i think it was called!this will be used to set the advance feature ,that should affect the whole tv ,BUT!YOU PROBABLY WONT WANT to be using this has your main connection!hdmi should be doing it if you have that!or it might be a version of dvi (very big white connector)but if you can it is hdmi you shoud use if you can !then you select one of the hdmi in your tv and you should see the signal being sent from your computer!some tv dont like it wwhen you have multiple ways of connecting to your tv so read instruction manual to make sure!hope this help!

I think you've read the thread wrong. There's no cable going from the pc to the tv. My tv has wifi so I'm trying to stream through the network

the TV only playing MP4's is also probably causing problems too.

You might look into a cheapo media center PC to hook up to the TV to use for watching shows and stuff.

I only want to set this up if I don't have to purchase anything extra unfortunately, I'd rather just plug in my external HDD in that case

Is there anyway to get the mkv files working or is it just a hardware/software limitation of the tv?

I am guessing it is a combination of both. The TV might not have the software codecs to read MKV files, and the hardware might not be powerful enough. If you have an xbox 360, you could setup that with windows media center. I did that and it works beautifully, and plays all the formats.

Most TVs don't natively support the decoding of .mkv files so you're stuck there, unless your owners manual tells you explicitly otherwise. Conversely there are many TVs that do natively support the mp4 file format and some even support the .avi file format.

Make a mental note, decode all future movies to .mp4 smile.gif

Streaming over wireless is hit and miss. Wireless G was a no go for me on my big Samsung HD Plasma unit, but works fine on my lower resolution laptops. Wireless N was a little better, but in the end I just went with a wired connection. As already mentioned, a lot depends on transmission strength, distance, location and obstacles (such as walls, floors, ceilings, wood, concrete, block, brick, etc.)

I think I am expecting too much out of my TV tongue.gif

Just gonna plug in my external when I want to watch stuff I think! It's weird though, the blu-ray players USB port can read the HDD fine but the receiver's one can't... The receiver's USB port definitely works though as I can connect my iPod to it

the USB port on the receiver might not put out enough power to power your hard drive. I know my hard drive can't be powered by some computers because they don't put out enough power.
