[Build Log] My dream rig-Sugar Maple (and a bit of back story)

I am new to building computers, posting on forums, and kinda new to OCN (lurked for a couple of years).

Back story

Hmm...were to start. This build is my first personal rig. It's actually the second computer I have built. The first one was built for my sister. We originally had a 3.2ghz 775 p4 hp desktop that we shared between us. Then in the fall of 2010 I started to take some courses online. So I bought the laptop that is in my sig. Compared to the p4 desktop the laptop was a beast.

Then in early 2011 the p4 desktop started to fail. So we debated what to replace it with. We looked at prebuilts, and custom built ones and used ones at local shops. Nothing we looked at seemed to fit what we wanted for the price we wanted to pay. I had discovered OCN a few years before that (never made an account till now) and had dreamed of building my own computer. I was always fascinated reading about computers even though I had never built one. So I thought this would be a good opportunity to give it a try. So I did lots of research on what parts to get that would fit our needs. I scoured OCN threads and read lots of reviews. It took a while but it was worth it.

This is what I built.

Intel i5 2400
intel HD 2000
Asus P8H67-M evo
8gb of mushkin DDR3
Western digital caviar blue 500GB
Seasonic 520 S12 II
Lian Li PC-7FNB
Asus VH197D

Back story continued

We did not have any new games at the time hence the HD 2000 graphics. It was able to play the games we had. I had so much fun building that rig. It was my first time ever building a computer. I can still remember the feeling after assembly when I booted it for the first time and it worked. It was alive!

Fast forward a few months and I had discovered minecraft. The new desktop could only play it on low settings. My laptop could play it but it would over heat a bit especially in the summer. I also started to look into new games. So why didn't I just buy a nice graphics card for the desktop? Two reasons. One, at the time my sister used the computer mostly for art work and only played older games the HD 2000 could handle. She is now getting into online gaming and skyrim so I will give her the 5770 after I upgrade. Two, I had caught the bug. I wanted to build another computer just for me.

So I built the computer that is in my sig back in July last year. I couldn't decide what case, monitor, and hence what graphics card to get. My mom had a 1366x768 monitor she was not using so I got a 5770 and decided to use that monitor until I could decide what to get. Same with the case just a cheap $40 case as a stand in.

Now I want to upgrade and finish this build. I play bf3 and skyrim now. While the 5770 handles both those games decently at that resolution, I would like to get a better monitor and play at higher settings.

My Dream build. Sugar Maple

Parts I own.
Intel i5 2500k
Asus P8P67
Antec HCG-520 watt
8GB of G.Skill 1600 DDR3

Parts I need to get.
I am going to slowly acquire these parts over the next couple of months as funds allow.

Graphics card - I have a max budget of $300. So I think I will be getting a HD 7850. I am trying to wait for the rest of kepler to come out to see if the prices on the radeons will come down. Or if nvidia has a kepler card with better price to performance around $300 I may go with one of those.

Case - Currently I am pretty sure I am going with the Fractal Arc Midi. Might change if I see something better. Seems the best case for around $100 plus I like the look of it.

Monitor - Not sure yet of budget yet probably around $150-300. Probably a 1080p monitor somewhere in the 23''-24'' range. Kinda of tempted to get a 120hz but may a bit out of my price range.

Sorry for the long read but wanted to share a bit of a back story for this build.

I have never benchmarked before so I might give that a try and get a benchmark of the current build to compare to the upgrade.

I might take some pictures of the current setup and post them later.

I bought an Asus VH238H monitor. Much better Monitor than the one I had. I can actually see things in dark areas in games:D
