Is my E8500 going BAD or...?

So I had my E8500 at 3.8 on stock voltage since I built it ~ 4 years ago. I love this machine - still cranks out all the games I need it to and consumes very little power. Anyways, I tried to overclock it recently past 3.8 and was unsuccessful (I believe my ram is holding me back even though its really good quality corsair ram) Anyways now I cant seem to find that stable point at 3.8 anymore with the old settings anyway. I even tried to loosen the timings to 5-5-5-15 with no success. Any recommendations on how to overcome RAM problems in overclocking to get the maximum out of my processor? I really want to hit 4.2'ish or higher if I can because I have a good cooler. Also my motherboard is a P5Q Pro.

I am just hoping its not my processor slowly starting to die. Anyone had problems with old overclocks not working anymore?

3.8GHz on stock voltage is good, but it might need more for 4GHz, especially if it's the C0 stepping (but even if it's the E0 stepping it might). Try more voltage.

What RAM do you have? I had a Maximus Formula, Core 2 Duo E8400 and Core 2 Duo E8600, and Corsair RAM (XMS2 DDR2), and the RAM was the holdup of those parts, but by time it was, it hardly mattered. I still got the Core 2 Duo E8400 to 4GHz (4.32GHz tops) and the Core 2 Duo E8600 to 4.8GHz tops before that happened. I was still able to run 8GB of the RAM (four modules) at 5-5-5-12 @1.9V like that. To be honest, not a lot of that RAM was too special just because it was Corsair, but it wasn't bad either. It depends on what specific stuff you have.

My Core 2 Duo E8600 did 4.0GHz at ~1.248V (idle; 1.224V to 1.232V load). What motherboard do you have, and what's the Northbridge chipset and it's voltage?
