Help me build the cheapest and smallest PC

Thread Starter
I'm looking to build a very eco friendly PC for my wife's family. I have no experience with building small budget builds, so I figured I'll turn to the forum.

Things that I would require are:

- Using a 300-400 budget, but the less the better
- No dedicated GPU, just the onboard GPU
- Smallest case possible, but just enough space for a single slot GPU in the future
- 200gb+ or - Harddrive
- No monitor, keyboard, mouse, or sound required, just the box and components.
- Components should be from latest hardware, like an i3 or something affordable

I appreciate anyone who chimes in on this thread. Anyone's input would be great.

Perhaps something that pulls less power than a bulldozer. If you want it to be small and unoticable (including sound) you are going to want to get an SSD for sure. totally silent and pulls very little power. Also an LED monitor. VERY thin, and sucks less power as well. A phenom II X2 should take care of you cpu needs very well. Low TDP. Like 40W or something. For the case are you thinking HTPC or just a small case?

hmmm, off the top my head hmm.. small budget intel rig you could use something like an antec isk-300 itx case, paired with an h61/h67 board (for example asrock h67 you could also look into some with onboard wifi if needed), along with a pentium g620 (can perform similar in some tasks with a amd A8) or a celeron 530 , should do everyday tasks pretty well.

Theres also a case such as this, which is a bit bigger but has more expandability (full size pci and hdd space), not sure what the budget is so just threw out some ideas tongue.gif

Built a budget rig off off a 630 awhile back for around ~$150 hassnt had any issues yet biggrin.gif

with your needs, an ITX build is in order.

SG05 /w 450W 80+ PSU
Foxconn H61S 1155 ITX Motherboard
1155 Pentium G530 2.4GHz CPU
hardrive/SSD of your choice
perhaps a slimline CD/DVD/BluRay drive/burner (slot-loaded is cool on the SG05)

I chose the SG05 because it has the ability to add a full size GPU and the Power Supply is more than you will ever need.
That said, if you want just enough space for a LP Single Slot GPU, the Rosewill/Apex M1-01 /w 250W PSU will fit the bill nicely.

total: 180-240ish + 60ish + 20ish
260-320$ ? + the cost of an OS.

My budget is between 300-400.

I am really digging the setup you suggested here. I am in California, so I will check Amazon for lower prices to avoid taxes. How reputable are the power supplies in those cases. I have always been weary of power supplies which come with cases.

I will look into those, at this point the CPU will be chosen based on price, and I am looking at CPUs around the 50USD range.

An x2 seems like a lot, especially when adding a motherboard. I'll look into those, particularly if the prices are within my budget.

Thanks for these suggestions. The onboard wifi is something I forgot about too, definitely would like one of those.

Those are in pounds, unfortunately I am in the US. I will look into those products though. I really forgot how much hard drives are now, damn.

got an sg05 great case, would def recommend it biggrin.gif since your looking for cpu in the $50 range, depending where you are in California, there are 2 microcenters which have a g620 for $50 last i checked. or a g530 is $49 on amazon.

Heres a h67 asrock with built in wifi ($110), i believe thats the cheapest itx 1155 with built in wireless m-pcie slot on amazon , theres also the intel h61 but you would have to purchace an add on wireless m-pcie card which can range from $10~40 depending.

Theres also the ZOTAC H67ITX-C-E (around $140) which has a few more sata ports and a display port depending on your needs

Alright. I would suggest an Athlon then. These are really nice little chips. Not world beaters but nice and stable. Like a good commuter car. I've used them in several budget builds.LINK
