Harddrive Help?

Thread Starter
I need help deciding what type of harddrive I should get?
Originally I was going to go with a 128GB PLextor SSD and that's it but I have a feeling I might fill that up fast and I would like to just get all the internals once and be done with it for the time being. However I was on a budget but I gave up Ergonomics (cool keyboard and mouse) for another HD instead.

Basically I'm asking what is my best option? I DO definitely want a SSD for Win7 OS to startup really fast and some programs ill be using such as Adobe After Effects, Premiere, Unreal Dev Kit, Creation Kit, and Skyrim. Could I fit my most used programs on a SSD and the others on just a HD?

Should I go for a lower GB SSD and use the saved $$ for a good keyboard and mouse or just keep the 128GB PLextor which I know will run well? Also do I need to set up RAID or whatever that is instead? I'm going to be using a capture card and I want to be able to use it to capture the most ridiculous quality possible without any lag whatsoever. Basically make it look like what I see on my TV or better. But most people say you have to have a RAID setup? Why? Do I if I have a SSD?

Here's my comp specs for what I'm getting so far. Just need help with HD/SSD:
Case: Thermaltake Chaser
GPU: AMD 7970
CPU: i7-3820
MoB: Sabertooth X79
RAM: Ripjaws Quad Channel 16GB
PSU: 700w Corsair
OS: win 7

HD/SSD: 128 Plextor SSD,
and
Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.D 1TB 7,200RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - OEM

Thank you so much, have a awesome day!

first off, wrong section.. you should move this to the HDD/SSD section smile.gif

Plextor SSDs are a quality SSD and i feel 128Gb will be fine for you and your programs.. trim down windows 7 to what you need to make it lightwieght. Seans guide can help you there..

also consider the crucial M4 128GB SSD as you can find great deal on such a great SSD.. The hdd you listed is fine for a data drive though i like my WD cavier blacks.. As to RAID your probably thinking of a RAID 0 array of two SSDs to make one large theoretical 2 x r/w performance increase.. i dont think you need to do that IMO as a quality single SSD should be fast enough..

if anything buy a second HDD and make a RAID 1 mirror would give your data drive some protection from failure.. you have the right idea to seperate the system drive from the data drive and SSD's are great for doing this with the higher performance as well.. combined with the rest of your rig it should be a nice beast smile.gif

Yea my bad I've just posted things like this everywhere and I never seem to get a reply :/ Memory seemed close enough lol srry.

You think the Plextor would be good enough to run a capture card on? Or do I need to RAID 0 a few harddrives?
if you get say two crucial M4 64Gb and put them in RAID 0 if you want eatra performance and will still give you 128GB approx of usaable space
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148528 and cheaper too for one of the top dog SSDs.. granted you lose trim this way but that is overcome by garbage collection which isnt really an issue tho image it to your HDD/s incase a SSD/drive fails in RAID 0 you will lose everything..

this will nice and fast to run the capture card software on.. tho even a single SSD would be nice..

Your HDD's: if you want to RAID HDD's use RAID 1 for two drives and RAID 5 for 3 drives.. and use for data, that way you have some measure of protection of your data for a single drive failure.. still even with RAID you should still back it up externally once your budget allows it smile.gif

Ok I kinda get it more now, thanks! I think honestly ill just stick with the 128GB SSD and another HD for misc stuff.

(Capture card is a Blackmagic Intensity Pro BTW)

My conclusion is that people have to RAID 2+ HD's to get the Capture Card to work properly but 1 Plextor 128GB SSD should match/out-preform a RAID HD setup so there's no need for that anyway. I like to cut down on confusion lol so Ill stick with buying 1 SSD and 1 HD smile.gif Thanks for your help!!!!!
