Did i ruin this CPU? *PLEASE HELP*

Ok, so there's this HP pavilion t000 from like 2002 or something, and i thought it needed a good dust removal which was successful until i think i may have taken the CPU off with the metal block of a heatsink. i know a bit about tech so didnt think id make a big mistake, Seems i did what this guy here said to be careful of...

heres a pic of the problem:mad:

heat sink upside down with something stuck to the bottom... which i've assumed to be the CPU.

There is a brown lever ish thing so i hope that means i can somehow put this back together, i think there should be people here that could advise me, thanks.

If you can remove the CPU from the heatsink you should be able to put the CPU back in the socket by lifting the brown lever, inserting the CPU the correct way (there will be markings) and lowering the lever.
I've done that plenty of times(with am3 socket processors though). What i lifted the heatsink the cpu came with it. What i did was took floss and slowly wedged it away without bending any of the pins. Alcohol helps.

Yup easy fix just re-seat the CPU. those chips don't stay put very well but when pulled off with the heat-sink its a straight off kinda thing and shouldn't be any damage. like was said above lift the clamp handle on the socket and line up the CPU right and then reset it in and then clamp it back and you know the rest with paste and such.

tried separating it with the floss but wont budge, any other ways? and once i manage to get it off off and put it in again, do i just have to apply thermal paste, put on heat sink + fan and im ready to use the pc again or is there anything else i need to know?
That retention system isn't good.
Just grab it by the sides and twist same thing happened to me when i took the cpu out of an old pc. There is really no risk of damaging it, the ihs (the copper plate attached to the cpu) is just stuck on there with a pretty strong seal. Just be careful to not break any pins and you'll be fine.
Mate, what you need to do here is A grip the sides and slowly twist, steady decent force, nothing jarring, or get thin wire and attempt to pry it out that way, heating up that heatsink will help, but the processes there would be a lil dangerous.

I'd suggest clamping the heatsink in something like a vice/hobby vice so you can have free hands to work with.

+1 for gripping the sides of the CPU VERY SLOWLY and wiggling left and right.

It's easier to pop the heat sink OFF the CPU after teh computer was running for 5-10minutes or so, since the thermal paste will be warm and melted.

you usually wiggle it (the heatsink) in that case.

But if you slowly "wiggle" the CPU left and right off the HEATSINK, if should slip off.

I would avoid using other objects to scrap it off. I would imagine it should wiggle off unless it is cemented on there (old).

Then just OPEN THE RETENSION bracket/arm level on the motherboard and RE-SEAT THE CPU by PUTTING IT IN, IN PERFECT ALIGNMENT; that is, no angle or you can bend the pins.

Then you could clean the old thermal paste and put some new and put the heatsink back on.

Or I guess you could use the same paste, though, it may not be nearly as effective assuming you broke the seal now.

Almost all of this.

New paste, its not that expensive and come on, its not gonna work too well after this.

There are markings on the CPU and socket to tell you how to insert the CPU.

Recommended tool for grabbing the cpu, vice grips, you could use a small series of matches to heat the CPU block up, but I do not recommend doing this without practice.
