2TB Seagate Barracuda Hard Drive Noise

Thread Starter
Can anyone identify the cause and implications of this sound?
The clicking noise is the mouse clicking.
It is brand new and I have experienced the same noise with 2 other identical HDDs.
It occurs anywhere between intervals of a minute to 30 minutes.

Link to HDD: http://ncix.com/products/?mode=productreviewread&product_id=66010

Sound occurs roughly 25 seconds in

Thats a normal sound HDD make when they are in sleep and you try to access them. Test it with SeaTools just to make sure its not defective.

I noticed that you also have some similar HDDs, do you experience the same noise as well?

I have older drives from a few years ago that do not make this sound, so why does this drive have noise?

I am going to run that SeaTools test that you suggested, thanks.
I have 2. I have them always ON because i hate waiting 10 seconds for them to turn ON when i try to open a file from that HDD. I dont remember correctly how they sounded but i think its normal. Not all HDDs are the same.

I have a 5900 RPM LP (Low Power) version. The link you provided is 7200 RPM so different HDDs.

I have not modified or changed any settings to my HDD. I am assuming that you thought I have the HDD in some "off" state, but I do not.
The sound is occurring while the HDD is on and running. Does that change your initial thought of it?

HDD turns off after 20 min if not used. If it happen even on use then its probably close to dying. Some HDD do make noise though when you are reading or writing in the. Test with SeaTools just to make sure.

I have run the Fast version of the Fix All SeaTools test with no problems.

I read that most people experience a spinning up/down noise when the HDD sleeps or comes out of sleep, however I have yet to read someone mention a noise such as mine.

Thanks Zealot for your help.

If anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know.

I don't want to scare you or anything, but there has been a line-up from Seagate that is known for those clicking problems. People complained a lot about that etc.

I bought some time ago (maybe a year) a 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda and after a day similar problem occurred, except it was more of a simple clicking than click of a mouse (like the clicking from pressing a mouse button, but not releasing). Anyways, it was going on like that for two more days and it definetely wasn't the sound of hard disk access as it was as loud as normal mouse clicking, so I thought I'd give it a go with hard scan tools. After that I found out 4 bad sectors, physical bad sectors and I'm not sure how more could I get of those before Hard Drive would fail (as compared to those that are made from electro magnetic "anomaly", there was only a limited supply of sectors to replace physical bad sectors).

Anyways, I fixed the problem three days after that. Problem was that my case was side down (for cooling), so my hard drive wasn't set on it's bottom but on it's side. As soon as I turned the case to sit up normally clicking noise stopped. And since I didn't have a single problem with it.

Never had that problem with any other hard drive, but yeah. Thought I'd shout out. Regards.

Also as someone previously said, test it with SeaTools (can get it from their official site).

Thanks for your input Goran.

I believe you may have my mouse clicking mistaken for the actual HDD crackling noise. The real sound of interest occurs roughly 25 seconds into the video.

However I have double checked to make sure my HDD is completely flat, and it is.

SeaTools also did not yield any bad results.

4 bad sectors is nothing, I have over 100 on my 250GB drive that's now ~5 years old and it's still going fine. AFAIK most hard drives have like 250+ "replacement" sectors.

OP if seatools checks out you should be fine. I haven't watched the vid but from your posts it doesn't sound serious.
