GTX580 on 1280x1024 = CPU Bottleneck?

Im pretty satisfied with my system so far but my lcd is broken so im forced to play on an old CRT right now. I've noticed when I play games like GTA 4, the framerates are perfect 60 fps flat with graphic mods etc, but if I pile up enough cars and explode them the frames go down to around 45 according to fraps.

So my question is will getting a bigger screen and play it on a higher resolution alleviate those CPU intensive moments? GTA 4 is the only game where I experienced anything remotely similar, but I was just wondering...

GTA is very CPU intensive...SLI/Crossfire or resolution will not make much of a difference there...Not sure what your CPU is OCed to...but try increasing it if you can

Yes, and I don't think squeezing the last remaining ghz out of this chip would make the difference, quite frankly, im just surprised it's that cpu intensive.

res bottleneck. when i ahd Q6600 + gtx 460 and went from 1280x1024 to 1080p. i gained 20 fps average in everything...

It doesn't matter. I can crank mine to 4.5 and I get huge frame rate drops when you up AI/traffic and certain options in general.
I can easily confirm that the CPU is the source of the bottleneck, GTA 4 uses three cores, CPU is a 75% and my GPU's usage plummets.

GTA 4 is either a terribad port or the developers thought that in 4 years our CPU's would be 6 times as powerful per core as Yorkfield.

No, going to a higher resolution won't magically release a CPU bottleneck. It might not be as noticeable, since the framerates will be less in general. But the CPU is going to be doing the same amount of work, regardless of the resolution. All you're doing by increasing res, is you're going to be increasing the GPU load. CPU load will stay nearly the same.

Well my in game sliders are pretty low, view distance at 15 and detail distance at 25, traffic density 50 and shadow density (im using patch #4) all the way down, everything else maxed out. (I get more stable fps when going from 'high' shadows to 'very high', that's why I suspected it was a cpu bottleneck in the first place).

You're NEVER going to get 60+ minimums in GTA IV...at least not right now. My i5 2500k @ 4.9GHz with my GTX 580 and 1080p screen did very VERY well maxing the game out, with the IcEnhancer mod. But I would dip into the 30's quite frequently. The game was very smooth though, completely playable.

Unfortunately, GTA IV is just one of those titles that we still can't seem to manage 60+ minimums on yet.
