I still put forward larger safe zones and the ability to gain more (for factions, businesses, "artisans") because a lot of us have jobs and will sometimes be away for days and days at a time and don't really have the ability to watch over our places for very long. Pvp is fun yes, but I think there needs to be more "civilization" because there are some of us that can't fend for ourselves yet, and aren't really able to get there because we're being slaughtered left and right.
All I'm asking for is larger chunks of "civilization". I want to build a house, have a businesses, and on the weekends go out and slaughter the small folk. Also if factions could purchase larger safe zones and build small villages/cities they could charge people to live there/be safe there/have a businesses there and gain more members to their faction to go raid elsewhere. I think it would be a lot of fun for the server to be something similar to the Dark Ages, when you're in fear of being raided and killed, but there's also the occasional village to take refuge in. Furthermore I think this sort of system would attract more players as well, because a. there's more options b. more server growth c. factions will have bigger roles, thus more community.
Finally, a few weeks and months down the road you may lose new players because everyone else has become too powerful and they won't be able to fend against them. As for the further safe zones it could even be a double edged sword, while you have can come across more safe zones they are still pvp so you would have to hire NPC guards to look after them and keep the peace. Factions could fight for land and charge players to safely go through it. I think there could be a really cool medieval sort of knight against knight lord against lord going on which would add growth to the game. If everyone's killing each other left and right, being murdered at the spawn, and what else will the server really reach it's potential?
Even with more safe zones and the ability to purchase larger ones (factions, businesses, "artisans", etc) there would still be tons of player verses player, murder, and killing. The entire idea of "survival" wouldn't just evaporate into the air. There would be tons of that, but also there would be communities, businesses, trade, and whatnot which in the end would allow being to basically get stronger and allow larger conflicts between faction and faction, player to player, to unfurl.
Furthermore some players might want to play survival mode because they like doing things themselves, or they want to own a business, etc. What's wrong with opening up such doorways? Maybe someone wants to run a town, have a farm, raise cattle, chickens, lead a faction to war against another faction, compete with another faction for a more attractive town, get protection money, or burn the country side to the ground? Why not all of that and killing everyone? Wouldn't that, in the long run become a more enjoyable experience for everyone involved? People would still have secret houses because they can't afford to pay a faction for protection (safe zones, guards, etc), run a business, and would be fair game to the raiders, there would be many houses left abandoned to be looted, and so on and so forth.
